Steve Virgen A simple explanation to Corona del Mar High's loss would be that its boys soccer team did not finish any of its many scoring chances. Yet, something more dramatic took place at the Sea Kings' field, where an emotionally driven El Dorado squad defeated CdM, 2-0, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs Saturday. With the Sea Kings trailing, 1-0, in the 13th minute, a loud gasp came over a crowd of about 350 when El Dorado senior Brett Mullinax and CdM senior Tristan Harris collided and their heads crashed against each other, while the two went for a 50-50 ball.

Rick Devereux The Newport Harbor High football team is a lot like the Mississippi River. It just keeps rolling along. The host Sailors (10-0-1) defeated El Dorado, 35-10, Friday night at Davidson Field in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division VI playoffs. The win was the fifth straight for the Tars and the first playoff victory since a 36-25 quarterfinal win over Cerritos in 2001. Newport, the No. 2 seed, will play host to Charter Oak (8-3)

Steve Virgen The buzz from a thrilling victory Saturday ceased for the Newport Harbor High girls basketball team Wednesday when visiting El Dorado came and, as Sailors Coach Jen Thompson put it, showed why it is the fourth-seeded team in CIF Southern Section Division II-AA. El Dorado used a 19-0 third-quarter run to break open a game it had already owned and went on to defeat Newport Harbor, 65-29, in a second-round game of the CIF Division II-AA playoffs.

Rick Devereux All the signs are pointing in the right direction for a long CIF Southern Section Division VI playoff run by the Newport Harbor High football team. The Sailors (9-0-1) are the Sea View League champions and host El Dorado in a first-round matchup at 7 p.m. Friday. The last time Newport finished the regular season undefeated -- a 9-0-1 run in 1999 -- the Tars finished the campaign as the Division VI champions. That was also the last time the Sailors opened the playoffs against El Dorado.

Barry Faulkner NEWPORT BEACH - It took 43 seasons for the Newport Harbor High football program to win a CIF Southern Section first-round playoff game, but the Sailors appear to have mastered the task since. The Sailors (9-0-1 and seeded No. 2) open the Division VI tournament Friday at 7:30 p.m. against visiting El Dorado (6-4) attempting to win the 17th playoff opener in their last 18 tries, dating back to 1973. The Tars' only opening-round elimination during that run came in 1993 against Glendora.

Steve Virgen BELMONT SHORE - "... Because there ain't no mountain high enough. Ain't no valley low enough. Ain't no river wide enough. To keep me from getting to you, babe," sang the Corona del Mar High girls water polo team in celebration of its 11-6 win over El Dorado to claim the CIF Southern Section Division IV title, CdM's first CIF championship, at Belmont Plaza Saturday. The Sea Kings danced, too, on the sands of Belmont Shore. This was their moment in the sun, a season to remember.

Rick Devereux The El Dorado High football team accomplished one of its goals against Newport Harbor in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division VI playoffs Friday. "We want to neutralize No. 44," El Dorado Coach Jeff Bailey said before the game. Trevor Theriot, who wears No. 44 for the Sailors, gained 34 rushing yards in Newport's 35-10 victory over the Golden Hawks. Theriot, who averaged more than 11 yards per carry, sprained his ankle when he was tackled from behind following a 27-yard burst to open Newport's second possession.

PLACENTIA -- Trailing by one with the season on the line in overtime of Friday's first-round CIF Southern Section Division VI playoff game, Newport Harbor High football coach Jeff Brinkley chose wide-bodies right over wide left. And after senior tailback Ryan Rippon darted one yard off right tackle for the game-winning two-point conversion to top El Dorado, 32-31, at Valencia High, the proof was in the poundage. After the Sailors answered an overtime-opening touchdown and conversion kick by the Golden Hawks with an 8-yard scoring pass from Tom Jackson to fullback Jack Tracy, Brinkley merely followed his own script.

Patrick Laverty As the No. 1 entry out of the Sea View League, the Newport Harbor High boys soccer team went into its first-round CIF Southern Section Division II playoff game as a favorite against visiting El Dorado. But that wasn't the attitude the Sailors took into the game. "We've always kind of been the underdog," Newport Harbor senior Matt Tracy said. "Even when we were in first place in league, teams didn't take us seriously." After Friday's performance, any team that fails to take the Sailors seriously is simply foolish.
