UC Irvine men's soccer coach George Kuntz was braced for the worst Monday when the NCAA Tournament pairings were announced. Still, he was unprepared for the disappointment of not receiving one of 48 berths, which meant an end to his team's season. "The finality of it is pretty devastating," said Kuntz, whose Big West Conference regular-season champions (14-3-3) were ranked No. 8 in the latest national poll. UCI, which had been to two straight NCAA tournaments and had won two conference regular-season championships and two conference tournament crowns in the last three seasons, had been ranked as highly as No. 7 nationally.

There will inevitably be some anxious moments for UC Irvine men’s soccer coach George Kuntz this season. But Kuntz, entering his 14th year at UCI on the heels of the program’s most momentous season, will likely face none as scary as those he experienced in the off-season. “It pretty much gave me a heart attack,” Kuntz said of injuries sustained by preseason All-American midfielder-forward Irving Garcia and junior forward Spencer Thompson. Garcia, who had seven goals and a team-best nine assists to help the Anteaters go 15-2-6 and earn their first Big West Conference regular season and tournament titles, en route to the round of 16 in their first NCAA Tournament appearance, was felled by a summer ankle injury.

Volk became a rookie head coach on Monday when UC Irvine named the 17-year Anteaters assistant to replace departed George Kuntz as the school's men's soccer head coach. "Was [the title-game loss to Clemson at Clemson] rookie-season luck? Possibly," said Volk, who takes the reigns for the first time in a college coaching career that includes 19 seasons in Division I. "It would be nice to have some success relative to that my rookie season as a head coach.

George Kuntz is molding his 17th class of mens’ soccer players as a collegiate soccer coach this year. The UC Irvine men’s coach has been around long enough to know what works and what doesn’t, at least for his program. Now that the recruiting zoo at UC Irvine has begun to die down as national signing day approaches on Wednesday, Kuntz had a little time to offer his opinion about how soccer players can best connect with college coaches and programs. Private, unaffiliated talent showcases tend to be a wash.
