Tony Altobelli LOS ALAMITOS - The long ball giveth and the long ball taketh away. One day after ripping four home runs to advance to the Los Alamitos Fish Fry Tournament semifinals, the Newport Harbor Baseball Association Bronco Division "A" All-stars gave up two costly dingers in a 6-4 loss to Garden Grove at the Los Alamitos Little League Park Tuesday afternoon. "Hey if it was a prizefight, we would have won on rounds," Manager Kevin Heenan said.

CYPRESS — Inside the gym it felt cold. Just imagine how chilly it felt outside in the rain. Estancia High played as if its boys’ basketball game was outdoors Wednesday night. The ball looked wet whenever the Eagles handled it down the stretch. Balls slipped out of players hands toward the basket or into the hands of Garden Grove players for easy points. These mistakes hurt any chance Estancia had of coming from behind to win its first game at the Oxford Academy Tournament.

Rick Devereux The hump the Estancia High football team figuratively needs to get over in order to be able to call itself a contender for a Golden West League title seems to get smaller and smaller. But the Eagles still plod uphill, as evidenced in their 41-34 loss Thursday to Garden Grove in a nonleague game. The Argonauts (5-0) are ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division IX, but Estancia (2-3) overcame a lackluster first half to make it a one-touchdown game.

Confronted with nearly 600 protesters upset over a proposal to join Irvine in "friendship" with city of Nha Trang in Vietnam, Irvine City Council members Tuesday night voted to revise their rules for choosing cities to be friends with. After more than five hours of debate, the council voted 3 to 2 to draw up new criteria  for forming "friendship city" ties. The new rules would exclude municipalities in countries that do not respect human rights or democratic values. They also chose not to enter into "friendship city" relationships with Karachi, Pakistan, or Baoji, China.

Regardless of how Costa Mesa voters cast their ballots Nov. 6, there is good news. Of the seven cities in the county that have populations larger than Costa Mesa, none had a higher voter turnout. In the city of Orange, 41% of the residents voted in the mayoral contest, a percentage that ties Costa Mesa. Of the remaining six cities, Anaheim, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Irvine and Santa Ana, the voter turnout was less, though it should be noted that the charter amendment in Huntington Beach drew 40% of the population.
