Barry Faulkner GARDEN GROVE - Costa Mesa High sophomore Billy Halverson singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning, but host Garden Grove rallied for a pair to claim a 3-2 baseball victory Friday in the Costa Mesa Tournament's pool-play opener. Josh Little, who relieved starter Jeremiah Haubrick in the sixth, led the Mustangs' 11-hit attack with a single, double and triple in four official at-bats. Halverson, as well as juniors Carlos Franco and Steven Shores had two hits for the Mustangs, who continue pool play Tuesday at home against Brentwood.

GARDEN GROVE -- Corona del Mar High's girls' basketball team beat Sage Hill, 55-51, in overtime at the semifinals of the Garden Grove Tournament on Wednesday. The Sea Kings' Shannon Johnson and Allie Duernberger combined to hit 6 of 8 free throws in the extra period. After a CdM foul with four seconds left, Sage Hill's Haywood Wright sent the game to overtime with a spinning jumper in the paint that fell in as regulation expired. Wright finished with 11 points in the game.

One day after ripping four home runs to advance to the Los Alamitos Fish Fry Tournament semifinals, the Newport Harbor Baseball Association Bronco Division "A" All-stars gave up two costly dingers in a 6-4 loss to Garden Grove at the Los Alamitos Little League Park Tuesday afternoon. CYPRESS — Inside the gym it felt cold. Just imagine how chilly it felt outside in the rain. Estancia High played as if its boys’ basketball game was outdoors Wednesday night. The ball looked wet whenever the Eagles handled it down the stretch. Balls slipped out of players hands toward the basket or into the hands of Garden Grove players for easy points. These mistakes hurt any chance Estancia had of coming from behind to win its first game at the Oxford Academy Tournament.
