Bryce Alderton One thing Steve Keith will have to get more of as the season progresses is balanced scoring from his Sage Hill High basketball team. That's what the first-year Lightning coach said following his team's 44-35 nonleague season-opening loss to visiting Garden Grove Tuesday night at Sage Hill. Senior Michael Fitzhugh (6-foot-3) scored 22 points to account for 62% of Lightning scoring and was the only Sage Hill player to score in double figures.

COSTA MESA - Estancia High junior Somer Flaherty won two events, including her debut in the 200-yard individual medley, but the Eagles were defeated by nonleague visitor Garden Grove, 109-61, in girls swimming Tuesday. Flaherty also won the 200 freestyle. Estancia senior Lauren Cassity arrived from her softball game in time to compete in the 100 breaststroke, an event she had not competed in before. Jennifer Cassity added the other individual triumph for Estancia, winning the 500 free.

Marisa O'Neil Federal authorities on Wednesday announced charges against 20 Orange County residents -- among them, one from Newport Beach and one from Costa Mesa -- accused of possessing or distributing child pornography. Federal grand juries issued indictments July 6 against John Breault, 42, of Newport Beach and Mario Ralph Riley, 49, of Costa Mesa, Assistant U.S. Atty. Richard Lee said. Both face up to 10 years in federal prison if convicted of a crime.

A Garden Grove man convicted of selling an old Costa Mesa police SWAT uniform to undercover officers and had guns and ammunition in his home will soon be heading to prison. Craig McVay, 48, was sentenced to 16 months in state prison last week after pleading guilty to possessing deadly weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition, which violated his probation. McVay was arrested in early August by Costa Mesa police, who were tipped off that he was selling one of their old SWAT uniforms on Craigslist.

Justin Davis gave up three hits and one earned run in six innings on the mound for the Eagles (2-1), who will meet the Rancho Alamitos-Garden Grove winner Saturday for fifth place at 2 p.m. at Newport Harbor. GARDEN GROVE - Costa Mesa High senior Ashley Wright scored eight goals to lead the Mustangs girls water polo team to a 17-10 nonleague victory over host Rancho Alamitos Thursday. The Mustangs (7-7) built a 4-0 lead in the first period and never looked back. Mesa seniors Katie Axton and Candice Carpenter scored three goals each, while senior Sarah Douglas added two and junior Allison Gravis netted one. Mustangs sophomore Gina Paulhus anchored the defense, stopping nine shots.

COSTA MESA - Costa Mesa High girls soccer got off on the right foot Tuesday as Sharon Day exploded for a hat trick and added a pair of assists to share in every score as the Mustangs belted visiting Garden Grove, 5-0, in the season opener for both teams. Day's three goals, with assists on scores by Katie Roche and Robyn Weber were more than enough for a defense which suffocated Garden Grove. "Our defense was just great," said Coach Dan Johnson. Barry Faulkner GARDEN GROVE - Costa Mesa High sophomore Billy Halverson singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning, but host Garden Grove rallied for a pair to claim a 3-2 baseball victory Friday in the Costa Mesa Tournament's pool-play opener. Josh Little, who relieved starter Jeremiah Haubrick in the sixth, led the Mustangs' 11-hit attack with a single, double and triple in four official at-bats. Halverson, as well as juniors Carlos Franco and Steven Shores had two hits for the Mustangs, who continue pool play Tuesday at home against Brentwood.
