Lolita Harper FASHION ISLAND -- More than 200 demonstrators marched down Newport Center Drive on Friday to protest the use of nonunion janitors in some Fashion Island offices. Busloads of demonstrators marched about two blocks before stopping in front of an office building in the 600 block -- one of the buildings that contracts with A&D Building Maintenance. The marchers' purple union shirts and faded bluejeans were a stark contrast to the suited people of the Newport Beach business community who were also on the street for their lunch hour.

Shawbong Fok Since opening in 1967, Fashion Island, the Newport Beach shopping center with views of the glittering Pacific, has undergone change in its infrastructure, reflecting the need to adapt to a dynamic business climate. The rationale behind such change was to remain competitive in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, one of the world's great shopping destinations akin to London, Paris, New York and Tokyo. Fashion Island, faced with stiff competition, has transformed from a conventional, relatively homogenous mall in 1967 to become a vibrant shopping mecca.

Philadelphia-based Anthropologie, a popular upscale sister store to Urban Outfitters, just re-opened after a fabulous expansion and remodel at Fashion Island. Anthropologie offers one-stop shopping for stylish apparel, home decor and gifts. It's easy to forget that it's a national chain retailer; it's more like a Parisian flea market. Skylights bathe the store with natural light, and a 30-foot antique cabinet from Europe gorgeously displays bedding. This double-height cabinet was a major find.

S.J. Cahn FASHION ISLAND -- Officials at Newport Beach's premier shopping center on Monday announced plans for new restaurants as part of almost 70,000 square feet of expansion to be finished by next spring. The construction, which will include 35,000 square feet of new buildings and the 33,000-square-foot addition of a third floor to Neiman Marcus, won't demand a Greenlight vote because it was approved in a 1994 agreement made before the slow-growth law took effect.
