A Whole Foods Market grocery opened its doors Wednesday morning at Fashion Island, drawing hundreds of customers who lined up for a chance to be among the first to explore the 32,000-square-foot shop. "I'm just really excited about having [it] close by," said Pattie Scott, who was the first in line. Scott was shopping with her cooking instructor, Susan Miller. Fashion Island is slated to get a $100-million makeover over the next two years featuring Italian-inspired fountains and 150,000 square feet of additional retail space, the Irvine Co. announced Thursday. The renovations will give the 42-year-old shopping center more of an old-world feel, with replicas of old Italian street lights and brick paving stones. The updated Fashion Island also will include patio seating and more small cafes tucked into corners at the center, to give the center a more European ambience.

Local mom Keree James has memories tied to the carousel at Fashion Island. Last weekend, she took her 9-month-old daughter there for her first ride. Deirdre Newman Sterile, uninviting, cold -- these are some of the adjectives used to describe Fashion Island by the two men who transformed it from a sprawling beast of a shopping center to an alluring destination. Daniel Donahue and Thomas Schriber of Donahue Schriber, a private real estate investment trust, redesigned Fashion Island in the late 1980s using a blueprint conceived by Irvine Co. Chairman Donald Bren. Today, the two real estate moguls will be honored by the UC Irvine Graduate School of Management with Lifetime Achievement Awards for their work at Fashion Island and other shopping centers throughout the county.

The Irvine City Council this week approved the purchase of a hand-painted carousel that used to be at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. The Venetian-themed carousel, which has 32 colorful animal figures and two chariots, can accommodate up to 40 children at a time. The 38-foot-diameter carousel is expected to become part of the Great Park’s Kids Rock playground, which is under construction. “The carousel will be an attractive addition and will add a dimension to the preview park that I know people will enjoy,” Councilwoman Beth Krom said in an e-mail.
