Women's clothing boutique Rebecca Taylor is set to open in Fashion Island in late fall, according to a news release. The 2,000-square-foot retail space in the Neiman Marcus-Bloomingdale's Courtyard will be the New York-based clothier's first Orange County store. The full collection of Rebecca Taylor clothing and accessories will be available at the store. "When designing the Fashion Island store, Rebecca wanted to reflect her lifestyle and create an oasis in Orange County where women can shop, enjoy a glass of champagne and be treated to a personally tailored shopping experience," Beth Budgaycay, executive officer of Rebecca Taylor, said in a prepared statement.

Baking classes and oven-fresh breads are coming to Fashion Island this October with the arrival of Belgian bakery and café Le Pain Quotidien. The restaurant founded by chef Alain Coumont, with U.S. offices based in New York, features whole and half loaves of wheat, rye, spelt, and five-grain walnut breads. The menu also offers baguettes, French rolls, organic brioche, muffins and other pastries, according to its website. Menu specialty items include cheese and hummus plates, open-faced sandwiches, quiche and other items.

Streets around Fashion Island will be closed this weekend for the March of Dimes March for Babies Walk, according to Newport Beach Police. San Nicolas Drive from Newport Center Drive east to Avocado Avenue will be closed to through traffic from 4 p.m. Saturday to Sunday afternoon. From 5 to 11 a.m. Sunday, roads surrounding Fashion Island and Newport Center will be closed for the walk. Parking is available in the two parking structures at Santa Rosa and Center drives.

Fashion Island has announced the arrival of two retailers set to open in late spring, according to a news release. Los Angeles-based clothing retailer M. Fredric and Beverly Hills-based macarons shop 'lette — both new to Orange County — will open in the Newport Beach shopping center. M. Fredric, which offers casual apparel for men, women and children, will open in a 4,400-square-foot space by the Iris Fountain. The French-style macaron store, 'lette, will open in a space near Nordstrom.

A man accused of firing more than 40 shots into the air outside of Fashion Island last month on Friday pleaded not guilty to 66 charges, according to a court official. Marcos Gurrola, 42, of Garden Grove, faces charges of shooting at an occupied building, aggravated assault and sentencing enhancements for the use of a firearm in connection with a shooting outside the Macy's building about 4:30 p.m. Dec. 15. The Newport Beach shooting took place one day after a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut killed 26 people.

A Garden Grove man who police said fired about 50 shots into the air and at the ground in a Fashion Island parking lot is expected in court Tuesday, jail records show. Marcos Gurrola, 42, was arrested Saturday by Newport Beach bicycle officers patrolling the open air mall as part of the Newport Beach Police Department's Operation Safe Holidays, according to department spokeswoman Kathy Lowe. Operation Safe Holidays begins in late November and runs through December, and the number of officers patrolling depends on the day of the week and activity levels, Lowe said.

The Irvine City Council this week approved the purchase of a hand-painted carousel that used to be at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. The Venetian-themed carousel, which has 32 colorful animal figures and two chariots, can accommodate up to 40 children at a time. The 38-foot-diameter carousel is expected to become part of the Great Park's Kids Rock playground, which is under construction. "The carousel will be an attractive addition and will add a dimension to the preview park that I know people will enjoy," Councilwoman Beth Krom said in an e-mail.

South Africa-based home designs store Carrol Boyes Functional Art has chosen Fashion Island for its first West Coast location, according to a news release from the Newport Beach shopping center. The store opened this week in a location adjacent to the koi pond. Carrol Boyes carries more than 1,000 products in contemporary fine gifts, home décor and accessories. The store is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. —Sarah Peters
