Andrew Edwards The name is a tongue twister. The store is like a giant toy box. Gary and Diane Naumann opened the fourth branch of Toy Boat Toy Boat Toy Boat last Tuesday at Fashion Island. The store is filled with tricycles, dolls, trucks and pirate ships. "We carry just about everything -- we have Mattel; we have Hasbro; but we have a lot of specialty toys," Gary Naumann said. Some favorite toys at the store, the Naumanns said, are the bright plastic Bruder trucks that are stacked near the doorway.

Numerous national and international media outlets are reporting that golf superstar Tiger Woods, a part-time Corona del Mar resident, met with a self-alleged longtime mistress at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach for at least one of their 20 trysts. California cocktail waitress Jaimee Grubbs, 24, claims that she has had an affair with Woods, 33, for 31 months, according to comments attributed to her in various news reports. Grubbs said the pair met most recently in October at the Island Hotel, where they watched “Angels and Demons” and then had sex. Grubbs claims Woods has sent her hundreds of racy text and voice messages, and has published some of them in US Weekly, a national magazine.

A teenager suspected by Newport Beach police of being the lone gunman that got away during a search last month near Fashion Island was killed by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies, authorities confirmed. Dalton Rahman, 18, was shot by Los Angeles County Sheriffs SWAT team members when he wrested a gun away from one of them as they tried to arrest him, according to a statement released by the sheriff’s department Nov. 6. Newport Beach police said Rahman was the man who eluded capture in early October, when officers went to a parking lot near Fashion Island where three men were reported acting suspiciously.

Fashion Island welcomed nautical lifestyle and clothing brand Sperry Top-Sider earlier this month at a 2,100-square-foot space between the Nordstrom and Pacific courts. The store is the 75-year-old Massachusetts-based company's first Orange County location and the largest on the West Coast, according to a news release. The brand's full range of men's, women's and children's footwear and apparel will be sold at the store. Signature accessories, such as tote bags and board shorts crafted from recycled sailcloth, will also be featured.

A bigger Wahoo's Fish Tacos will soon come to Fashion Island and feature a full bar, said a spokeswoman for the Newport Beach shopping center. Wahoo's will relocate from its existing space upstairs near the Edwards Island Cinemas to a 4,500-square-foot location in the Atrium Cafés, said Fashion Island spokeswoman Jane Gillespie. The new location is almost twice as big as Wahoo's present location at Fashion Island. It's scheduled to open this summer and serve as the company's flagship location.

ECCO Shoes will open its first retail store in Orange County next month at Fashion Island in Newport Beach. The store is scheduled to open there on Nov. 5, Fashion Island officials said in a news release issued Monday. ECCO, a Danish shoemaker, was founded in 1963, and offers footwear ranging from men's and women's dress and casual styles to children shoes and shoes for golf and other sports. "We are excited to announce the opening of our new retail location at Newport Fashion Island, bringing the ECCO brand to consumers in Orange County," Linda Clohosey, vice president of ECCO's Americas retail division said in a prepared statement.

Celebrity fashion designers Rachel Roy and David Meister will host events at Style Week Orange County at Fashion Island. The fourth annual event will include functions at both the Irvine Spectrum, where the event began, and at Fashion Island from Sept. 30 to Oct. 8. Both shopping centers are owned by the Newport Beach-based Irvine Co. This is the first time Fashion Island has been included in the event. "With Style Week Orange County's debut at Fashion Island this year, we are thrilled to present two of America's most respected designers, Rachel Roy and David Meister," Laura Davis, senior marketing director of Fashion Island and Irvine Spectrum Center, said in a prepared statement.

The Newport Colony Co., sister store to the Laguna Beach Colony Co., has opened a location in Fashion Island. The Newport Colony Co. offers unique furniture, accessories, décor, jewelry, bath products, candles and other gift items. The store also sells in-house interior design services and staging, according to a news release. "Our goal is to create an oasis of beauty, tranquility and comfort in the home," owner Paul Mosley said in a prepared statement. "You dream it … we bring it to life!"

Passport to Luxury, an annual event coordinated by Fashion Island and Riviera magazine, returns to the Newport Beach shopping center on Friday. At the free event, there will be food, drinks and one-night deals from center's restaurants and stores. Shoppers will receive a "passport" at the Gazebo in the Neiman Marcus-Bloomingdale's Courtyard. When shoppers collect six stamps from participating stores, they can enter to win a Fashion Island gift card and other prizes. Sales for tickets to enter a drawing for a four-day, three-night stay at the Pueblo Bonita Oceanfront Resort & Spa, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, benefit the Children's Hospital of Orange County.

A man who fired a handgun 54 times at Fashion Island because it reportedly made him "feel better" was sentenced Friday to 12 years in state prison. Marcos Gurrola, 42, of Garden Grove pleaded guilty to 54 counts of shooting at an occupied building and two felony counts of aggravated assault. In December 2012, Gurrola drove to Newport Beach, pulled into Fashion Island's parking lot and began firing a .40-caliber Glock toward Macy's. No one was hit, but in the ensuing panic, a woman and her 4-year-old daughter were hurt while trying to run away, leading to the assault charges.

SoulCycle, a trendy brand of spinning that enthusiasts claim as life-changing, may be coming soon to Newport Beach - its first Orange County location. The lease has not been finalized, but the city granted a minor use permit Thursday to clear the way for the spin studio's move to Fashion Island. "The application was submitted with the intent that they would be coming if they were approved," said Brenda Wisneski, the city's deputy community development director. Based in New York, SoulCycle was founded in 2006 and now boasts 26 locations, including Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, West Hollywood and Brentwood.

A woman told Newport Beach police that she was robbed in a parking lot near Fashion Island Tuesday but was unable to give police a consistent description of her alleged assailant, an official said. The robber allegedly strong-armed a purse and watch away from the woman around 12:30 p.m. and fled in an unknown direction, Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said. The victim came to the Police Department Tuesday to report the crime but was not cooperative, according to police.

Sweaty and visibly exhausted from their mile-long run, a group of boys from Harbor View Elementary School stood in a circle showing off their newly earned participation medals. A parent walked over and high-fived each boy. Ben Schaefer, a fifth-grader at Harbor View, shared his secret for a successful run with his friends. "They tell you to jog so you won't get tired, but I always sprint," the 11-year-old said. He admits, though, that he did get the dreaded side stitch that plagues even the most experienced runner.

Students, teachers and families from Newport Beach and Costa Mesa will lace up their running shoes and race around Fashion Island on Sunday morning to support local schools and encourage youth fitness. The 31st annual Newport-Mesa Spirit Run, which hosts children's contests and adult 5K, 10K and 15K races, has raised $150,000 for Newport-Mesa Unified schools in the past three years, according to its website. What started as a small fundraiser for five Newport Beach elementary schools expanded to include nearly the entire district in 2011, said Diane Daruty, Spirit Run president and race coordinator.

Fashion Island, Irvine Spectrum, and the Eastbluff Village, Crystal Cove and Bayside shopping centers, have announced the openings of multiple new businesses. Each of the centers is owned and operated by the Newport Beach-based Irvine Co. Some of the new businesses opened in the latter half of 2013, others early this year, and additional ones are coming in the months ahead. Offerings include shops, restaurants, apparel boutiques and a comedy club. "More than ever, our retail centers offer more than just a place to come shop," Stacie Ellis, senior marketing director for Irvine Co. Retail Properties , said in a news release.

Leigh Steinberg smiled as he looked at the people who showed up for his book signing event at the Fashion Island Barnes & Noble Thursday night. "I'm happy to be back home, finally," Steinberg said. He explained that he has been promoting his new book, "The Agent: My 40-year career making deals and changing the game," and working to relaunch his work as an agent for athletes. Last week, he was in New York for the Super Bowl, where he held a party that also provided awareness and support for various charities.

The Resort at Pelican Hill and the Spa at Pelican Hill recently received five stars in the annual Forbes Travel Guide . This is the 55th year for the ratings and the fifth consecutive year Pelican has earned the distinction. The Forbes Guide was previously known as the Mobil Travel Guide . Pelican, according to a news release, is the only hotel in Newport Beach to receive a five-star rating. The nearby Island Hotel at Fashion Island received four stars and also announced that it had become part of Preferred Hotel Group , a points system for luxury travelers.
