CERRITOS — A new football coach. Same opponent. But a different result this time for Sage Hill School. The Lightning faced the same opponent it opened last season with and they couldn’t give their newbie coach the same outcome as last year’s first-year coach. Sage Hill came to Fairmont Prep’s turf ready for its ultimate weapon Saturday night. Coach Derek McIntyre read all about Richard Johnson. He just didn’t figure Johnson would excel at everything.

Newport Beach police have identified the body of a woman found Thursday in a hotel room as Monique Felicia Trepp, a 33-year-old resident of Huntington Beach. Trepp’s body was discovered packed in dry ice in a container in a room at the Fairmont Newport Beach after police arrested the room’s occupant, Stephen David Royds, on suspicion of selling drugs. The Orange County Coroner’s Office has said the death does not appear to be a homicide and has not determined the cause or time of death.

NEWPORT COAST — Nearly every time the ball came off the rim at either end of the court, a Sage Hill School player was in position to grab the rebound. More often than not, that player seemed to be Lightning sophomore Hannah Jeffrey. The 5-foot-11 forward tallied a career-high 19 rebounds, helping Sage Hill cruise to a 66-45 nonleague victory over Fairmont Prep on Wednesday at Sage Hill. Jeffrey came off the bench midway through the first quarter and already had 10 rebounds at halftime.

Amid the anxious, yet cheerful atmosphere that comes with a season-opening high school football game, two freshmen were eaglery wanting to give their new coach a victory in his debut. Sage Hill School’s T.J. Danner and Taylor Ross also did their best to ignore the fact they were donning varsity uniforms for the first time and instead acted as if they had been there before. They both contributed to the Lightning’s thrilling 30-26 season-opening victory over visiting Fairmont Prep on Friday night.

NEWPORT COAST — Third-and-43. Not a position a high school football team wants to be in during its first game of the season, at home no less. In the third quarter Friday night, Sage Hill School was backed up farther than the fans who waited in line for food from the In-N-Out hamburger truck at the pregame tailgate party. Enter Nick Witte. The Lightning senior receiver caught a Jamie McGee pass in the open field, turned on the afterburners to outrun two defenders and made up 41 of the yards on one play.

For a program that’s not in the Academy League, Fairmont Prep is an extremely familiar opponent to Sage Hill School. The Lightning have played the school from Anaheim for the last five years, and over that time both teams have built up their respective programs. Tonight, they’ll see who can get the early edge in the 2007 season when Sage Hill plays host to Fairmont Prep at 7 p.m. “They’re a young program, very similar to us,” Lightning first-year Coach Pete Anderson said.
