A memorial for the late Jim Scott, a passionate Costa Mesa schools booster, will be held at the Estancia High boys' gym Friday at 4:30 p.m. Scott, who led projects that included a new football stadium at Estancia High, died of heart failure on May 14. He was 85. Estancia's football stadium is named after him. He was highly instrumental in getting facilities constructed at Costa Mesa and Estancia high schools. He led efforts to gather support in the community and generate funds.

COSTA MESA - The Estancia High girls golf team opened Pacific Coast League play with its first win of the season, defeating Costa Mesa, 166-173, Tuesday at the Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club's Mesa Linda Course, par 35. Estancia junior April Duch was the medalist with a 52, followed by teammate Anh Do and Costa Mesa's Jean You, both at 53. The rest of the field included Mesa's Katy Renish (59), Estancia's Jennifer Patton and Mesa's Brynn Wilcox (both 61)

The Costa Mesa High girls’ soccer team can clinch the outright Orange Coast League title with a win or a tie against visiting Laguna Beach tonight at 6 at Estancia High. The Mustangs (10-5-7, 5-0-2 in league) have six points in the league standings (one point for a win and one-half point for a tie). Estancia with five points, would need to beat Calvary Chapel and hope Costa Mesa loses to gain a share of the title with Mesa. In that case, a coin flip would decide the league’s No. 1 playoff representative.

Estancia High senior Connor McKendry, the Golden West League’s Most Valuable Lineman, has been nominated as an Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year. He is among a select group of players who are eligible to be selected as one of 50 who will be a national Red Zone Player of the Year. High school coaches across the nation nominated one player from their team as their player of the year. As a nominee, each player will receive a certificate to acknowledge his accomplishment.

COSTA MESA - Estancia High junior Joey Mueller earned medalist honors when he shot 3-over-par 39 to lead the Eagles boys golf team past Pacific Coast League foe Laguna Beach, 207-228, at Mesa Verde Country Club Tuesday. Estancia junior Pete Baker, senior Greg Rausch, and sophomore Jason Cassidy each shot 41, while junior Nick Razo shot 45. Estancia (9-4, 5-3 in league) will compete in the Tribute to Youth Tournament, a 32-team event in Palm Springs today at Cimmarron Golf Resort and Thrusday at Desert Princess Country Club.

Estancia High placed third in the school's fourth annual girls golf tournament Monday at the Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club's Mesa Linda course. Marina, ranked No. 2 in Orange County, won with 229 strokes over nine holes, followed by Edison (237) and Estancia (259). Trang Do (49) led the Eagles (0-1), who will open Pacific Coast League play today against Corona del Mar. Estancia's April Duch and Jen Patton each shot 51. Michelle Monette shot 52 and Georgina Ortua shot 56 for the Eagles.

COSTA MESA - Despite tough conditions, the Estancia High boys golf team still holds a five-shot lead over Palm Springs, 224-229, in nonleague action played at the Mesa Verde Country Club, par 36. Jason Cassidy and Pete Baker each shot a 42 for Estancia, while Joey Mueller (44), Ryan Brown (48) and Aaron Frankel (58) complete the Eagles' top five. The two schools will resume their match on April 23 at the Canyon Country Club. The Eagles will play again on Thursday at the Mesa Verde Country Club against Long Beach Millikan, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

The Estancia High cross country and track and field programs will hold its annual 5K fundraiser Sunday morning at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa. The cost to run in the 5K is $30 and it includes a pancake breakfast and T-shirt. There will also be a kids' 1,000-meter race, which costs $10 per runner. The 5K race will begin at 8 a.m. and the kids will run afterward. - From staff reports

Jake Knapp, who recently graduated from Estancia High, reached the round of 16 at the 87th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah. Knapp, bound for UCLA, defeated Bryson Dechambeau of Clovis, Calif., 1 up Thursday morning. Later in the day, Knapp fell to Alberto Sanchez of Nogales, Ariz., 1 up in the round of 16. Knapp will next play in the Southern California Golf Assn. Amateur Championship July 20-22 at Big Canyon Country Club.

The Estancia High girls' basketball program will be holding its annual summer camp for fifth- through eighth-graders June 24-July 17, Mondays through Thursdays from 9-10:30 a.m. The cost of the camp is $125 per player. Coaches will provide individual instruction and help develop basic basketball skills, fundamentals and team-building concepts that will help improve players' game and skills.
