The Corona del Mar High boys' volleyball team has been crowned the Pacific Coast League champion, the CIF Southern Section Division II champion and the CIF Southern California Regional Division II champion. What is next for CdM? Coach Steve Conti said his Sea Kings (32-4) are soon going to be crowned ESPN RISE national champions on campus. Don Grable, the school's athletic director, said the presentation by ESPN RISE might take place next week. Conti said the Sea Kings this week held their team banquet, where Stanford-bound middle blocker Spencer Haly learned he was the Pacific Coast League MVP and the CIF Southern Section Division II Player of the Year.

A Corona del Mar High boys’ soccer team that relished the underdog role Thursday, will have it again today, when the Sea Kings meet Santa Barbara in the Division II final of the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs at Warren High in Downey. Kickoff is 1 p.m. CdM (26-1-1), ranked No. 9 nationally by ESPN Rise, is the CIF Southern Section Division IV champion, its first section crown. The Sea Kings have won 14 straight since sustaining their only loss, a 1-0 setback to Pacific Coast League rival University on Jan. 15. They defeated Southern Section Division I champion JSerra, 3-2, in the regional semifinal Thursday at Aliso Niguel High.

History will forever smile upon the 2009-10 Corona del Mar High boys’ soccer team, which collected the program’s inaugural CIF Southern Section (Division IV) and CIF Southern California Regional (Division II) titles, finished 27-1-1 and is ranked No. 5 nationally in the latest ESPN Rise poll. But Sea Kings Coach George Larsen said any historical review of this landmark season should not gloss over the amount of misfortune CdM had to overcome. “They won everything they could win,” said Larsen, a first-year coach.

The road in the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs has been relatively easy for Corona del Mar High. “We’ve been pretty fortunate,” Coach Steve Conti said. “We’ve only had one road match [in the first three rounds] and we traveled five or six miles up PCH for that one.” The Sea Kings are at home tonight for the third time during the postseason. Conti isn’t planning on staying put. He normally doesn’t when he has his boys’ volleyball team in the semifinals.

Recent Corona del Mar High graduate Brian Ford continues to garner honors as a two-sport star. Ford earned the Pacific Coast League Male Athlete of the Year award after excelling on the baseball and soccer fields. Ford wrapped up a stellar baseball season in which he received first-team all-league and second-team CIF Southern Section Division III laurels. Ford was one of the best center fielders in Orange County. He used his speed well and only committed one error with the Sea Kings (13-11, 7-8 in league)

Even Coach Ryan Schachter sounds sick. He joked that the Corona del Mar High boys' basketball team last week could not avoid the plague, which cost the team a lot. The Sea Kings lost an outright Pacific Coast League title and a No. 3 seed in the CIF Southern Section Division III-AA playoffs. Schachter blames CdM's only two league losses, which came last week, on the cold and flu bug that hit his team. He said he and his players feel a little better, especially after CdM just dropped two seeds in the playoffs.

CORONA DEL MAR — Any road to a championship season has it bumps. For the Corona del Mar High boys' volleyball team, it hit a major one on April 21 in Los Angeles. Loyola on that night swept the Sea Kings in three sets, on all three levels. On the bus ride home, Coach Steve Conti and his assistants were perplexed with how the players carried themselves. Remember, the Sea Kings went out in the same fashion at home to the Cubs in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs last year.
