A former NFL linebacker was sentenced Friday to life without the possibility of parole for the 1994 slaying of a wealthy Newport Beach businessman, prosecutors said. Eric Naposki, 45, and his then-lover, Nanette Packard, 47, killed Bill McLaughlin in a scheme to take $1 million in insurance money and live in McLaughlin's waterfront house rent-free for a year, prosecutor Matt Murphy told jurors at Naposki's trial last year. At the time, Packard dated and lived with McLaughlin.

Sentencing for a man convicted in the 1994 killing of a wealthy Newport Beach businessman was delayed until next year, officials announced Friday in a Santa Ana courtroom . Eric Naposki, 44, was convicted of first-degree murder in July in connection with the death of Bill McLaughlin. Prosecutors said McLaughlin was killed so Naposki and his then-girlfriend, Nanette Packard, could live rent-free in McLaughlin's beachfront home and collect his $1 million life insurance money.

A man convicted of murdering a wealthy Newport Beach businessman in 1994 is scheduled to be sentenced Friday in a Santa Ana courtroom. Eric Naposki was convicted in July of first-degree murder with a sentencing enhancement for committing murder for financial gain in the slaying of Bill McLaughlin. Prosecutors claimed in court that Naposki plotted the murder with former girlfriend Nanette Packard in order to collect $1 million in life insurance and live for free in his beachfront home in Newport Beach.

SANTA ANA — Nanette Packard-McNeal was described in court Monday by her own attorney as dishonest, unfaithful and only interested in men with money. Those character flaws withstanding, she is not guilty of murder, argued public defender Mick Hill. "She always had a lover on the side," Hill said. "Does that mean she's a killer? No. " Hill added that she would "never, ever leave Bill McLaughlin for someone with no money. " Packard-McNeal, 46, is accused of plotting with her lover, Eric Naposki, to kill her boyfriend McLaughlin, 55. She has pleaded not guilty.

A former NFL player and his former girlfriend from Ladera Ranch can stand trial for the killing of a Newport Beach man nearly 15 years ago, Orange County Superior Court Judge Robert Gannon ruled Monday. Nanette Packard, 44, and Eric Naposki, 42, are charged with killing Bill McLaughlin, a Newport Beach father and successful businessman, on Dec. 15, 1994. Prosecutors claim that Packard, who was financially supported by McLaughlin and was his longtime girlfriend, persuaded her secret lover, Naposki, to kill McLaughlin inside his home.

SANTA ANA — Jurors heard the first part of closing arguments Wednesday in the case against a woman accused of plotting the death of her boyfriend, a wealthy Newport Beach businessman. Nanette Packard-McNeal, 46, is accused of conspiring with her lover, Eric Naposki, a former NFL linebacker, to kill Bill McLaughlin, 55, in December 1994. She was dating McLaughlin while also seeing Naposki. She has pleaded not guilty. Naposki was found guilty of McLaughlin's murder in a separate trial over the summer.

SANTA ANA — Family and friends of a slain Newport Beach businessman cried and hugged in a courtroom here Monday when the second of two killers was convicted of murder. Following almost four hours of deliberations, a jury of nine women and three men convicted Nanette Packard-McNeal, 46, of murder for financial gain in the 1994 shooting of her then-boyfriend, Bill McLaughlin. Eric Naposki, a former NFL player, was convicted last summer of pulling the trigger. While Packard-McNeal was with McLaughlin, she was also dating Naposki on the side.

SANTA ANA — A jury on Thursday found a former NFL player guilty of murdering his lover's boyfriend for financial gain in Newport Beach. Eric Naposki, 44, was found guilty of first-degree murder for plotting the shooting death of Bill McLaughlin on Dec. 15, 1994. The Orange County Superior Court jury agreed with prosecutors on all counts, and added a sentence enhancement for murder for financial gain. As the verdict was read in the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana, Naposki shook his head and turned to look at his fiancée, who was sitting behind him in the audience.
