Tony Altobelli COSTA MESA - Sometimes, patience and understanding gives way to a good, old-fashioned trip to the shed. Just ask the Corona del Mar High boys basketball team, following Tuesday night's 85-35 pool-play loss to El Dorado at the Coast Christmas Classic at Estancia High. "I chewed them (the CdM players) out a little bit at halftime," CdM Coach Paul Orris said. "It's one thing to be patient, but when the team isn't executing the offense properly, that's a different story."

Tony Altobelli PLACENTIA - It's a sound goalies love and goal scorers hate, especially in the middle of a playoff game. It's the ringing sound of soccer slamming off a goal post and for Newport Harbor, that sound was heard one time too many in Friday's 2-1 CIF Southern Section Division II boys soccer loss. Trailing, 2-0 and with a free kick, Newport's hottest goal scorer, Trey Meek, ripped a shot off the right goal post with 20 minutes remaining in the game.

Barry Faulkner Sound. Solid. The two words resonate repeatedly from those discussing the Newport Harbor High football team's defense. But two words used by Irvine High Coach Terry Henigan, whose Vaqueros (10-2-1) meet the Sailors (12-0-1) in the CIF Southern Section Division VI championship game Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Orange Coast College, provide a more compelling narrative. "My golly," Henigan said of the unit which has yielded an Orange County-low 99 points.

Joseph Boo BELMONT SHORE - Never mind this year's nonleague game on September 14 against Servite High. For Corona del Mar's boys water polo team, today's CIF Southern Section Division II finals might as well be the first meeting between the two this year. In the season opener, the Friars destroyed a depleted CdM team, 14-5. In that game, CdM was missing key players Garrett Gentry, David Fabian and D.J. Jackson. And, Morgan Johnston was under the weather.
