WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Vanguard 103, San Diego Christian 68 EL CAJON — Nicole Ballestero and Taylor Belmont scored 23 and 22 points, respectively for the No. 1 ranked Lions in a Golden State Athletic Conference opener Tuesday. Belmont also had 13 assists. She shot six for six from the field and hit her only three-point attempt. She was nine for 11 at the foul line. Samantha Doucette added 16 points and Ashleigh Anderson finished with 12 points for Vanguard (12-0, 1-0 in conference)

MEN’S BASKETBALL Vanguard 62, San Diego Christian 59 EL CAJON — Elvis Whitelow finished with 20 points and eight rebounds in the Lions’ Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday. Andrew Ellis has 17 points for Vanguard (4-10, 3-3 in conference). EL CAJON - After the first round of Orange Empire Conference play, the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team remains undefeated after winning, 25-13, 23-25, 25-20, 25-10, at defending OEC-champion Grossmont Friday. OCC freshman Morgan Jackson, a Corona del Mar High product, finished with a game-high 14 kills, while B.J. Lightvoet contributed 12. Pirate sophomore Nick Ptsaschinski had 43 assists and Ed Chun went low for 13 digs. OCC Coach Chuck Cutenese said he was especially impressed with the victory because starters, Jeff Taylor, Ryan Owens and Dave Engle were out with injuries.

WOMEN'S TENNIS Southern California Regional Individuals EL CAJON — Orange Coast College's Anna Walinowicz qualified for the state championships in singles and doubles, with partner Lianne Wheelock, after reaching the quarterfinals Friday at Grossmont College. Walinowicz defeated Palomar's Karleyne Ishima, 7-5, 6-3, in the round of 16, and beat Santa Barbara's Nicci Yzanovich, 6-1, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Walinowicz and Wheelock defeated Riverside's Brooke Vorhees and Brittany Gourlay, 6-0, 6-1, in a round of 16 match.

Tony Altobelli EL CAJON - Laura Lee scored 16 points, including four three-pointers to lead the Vanguard University women's basketball team to a 68-46 Golden State Athletic Conference win over host Christian Heritage Tuesday night. Becky Huddle added 13 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Lions (25-5, 14-3 in conference), while Rachel Fiske chipped in with 12 points. The Lions held Christian Heritage to 5 of 18 shooting in the first half and led, 34-22, never looking back.

EL CAJON - The Orange Coast College baseball team scored its fourth win out of five games after a 4-0 victory over Grossmont Friday to open the Apache Classic played at colleges in the San Diego area. OCC sophomore Jeremy Lahman smacked a two-run home run in the eighth inning that brought in sophomore Scott Beerer, who singled. Freshman first baseman Kyle Stanley and sophomore catcher Ryan Hanson both went 2 for 4 for the Pirates (4-1). Grossmont dropped to 2-4. Sophomore Justin Azze recorded his second win of the young season, pitching eight scoreless innings.

EL CAJON - Shawn Conery led four Southwestern College players in double figures with 19 points as the Apaches (6-4) defeated Orange Coast, 89-71, Friday in the first round of the Cuyamaca men's basketball tournament. Ryan Webster, a 6-foot-4 sophomore forward, came off the bench to score a season-high 23 points for Orange Coast (1-8), making 7 of 12 from three-point territory. Freshman guard Stephon Seales had 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals for OCC, while teammate Mark Meyers added 13 points, five boards and three assists.

EL CAJON - The Orange Coast College men's basketball team could not overcome a 61-26 halftime deficit and lost, 81-61, to host Cuyamaca in nonconference action Wednesday. OCC freshman Jason Garey led the Pirates (1-7) with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore Ryan Webster also posted double figures with 12 points. Cuyamaca improved to 5-4. The Pirates return to action Friday at 3 p.m. and will play at Southwestern. BASEBALL Vanguard 1, The Master's 0 (11 innings) El CAJON — Thomas Mobley singled and John Schwer doubled with one out in the top of the 11th inning to break a scoreless tie, while Eddie Rivera (nine innings) and Roberto Johnson (two) combined on a three-hit shutout in the opening round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday at Grossmont Community College. Schwer was two for three and Mobley was two for five to pace a seven-hit attack for the No. 22-ranked Lions (32-19)

The Newport Lightning girls' basketball team took first place in the eighth-grade gold division of the Halloween Ball Tournament. The Lightning began the Halloween Ball Tournament with a convincing 40-15 win over SGV. Natalia Bruening started the Lightning with a quick six points to set the tone for the game. Leading in scoring and the offense was point guard Frankie Wade with 12 points. Also contributing to the game was Heather Fujii , who played an all-around great game.

BASEBALL Washington 13, UC Irvine 12 SEATTLE — A baserunning miscue proved costly for the No. 10-ranked Anteaters, whose four-run ninth-inning rally fell just short in the nonconference game Wednesday at Husky Ballpark. Junior second baseman Casey Stevenson was ruled out for missing first base on what would have been a double in the ninth. Junior center fielder Cory Olson followed with a single to center that would likely have allowed Stevenson to score from second base.
