NEWPORT BEACH - On the Newport Harbor High sideline, standout players wore hooded sweatshirts, jeans, outfits not fit for a football game Thursday. The Sailors went into the evening with a shot at sharing the Sunset League title. They looked banged up before the home game even started against Edison. Newport Harbor's focus turned to getting healthy for the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division playoffs next week after the Chargers clinched the outright league title with a 35-7 win. On senior night at Newport Harbor, the Sailors missed three key seniors.

HUNTINGTON BEACH - Dedication ceremonies, which are expected to draw a large turnout honoring the late Dave Mohs of Newport Beach, are Jan. 28 at Edison High. The program, naming the facility the Dave Mohs Gymnasium, will be at halftime of Edison's varsity basketball game against Marina, which begins at 7 p.m. Some 35 years of Sunset League notables, which include many years when Newport Harbor was a member of the famed circuit, are expected to attend, as well as the volleyball community encompassing Southern California.

HUNTINGTON BEACH - Newport Harbor High's boys volleyball team made it two in a row Friday at Edison High in the Orange County Volleyball Championships. The Sailors (9-2) defeated Esperanza, 15-13, 13-15, 15-9, then knocked off Laguna Beach, 15-11, 15-7, to advance to the championship bracket of the tournament. Billy Clayton had 17 kills, while Blake Tippett and Dustin Illingworth each chipped in with 10 kills in the win over Esperanza. Setter Kent Turner dished out 42 assists for the Sailors.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Senior JB Green finished with 19 digs, 16 kills and three service aces Saturday, helping the Newport Harbor High boys’ volleyball team go 3-0 Saturday at the Orange County Championships at Edison High to reach Monday’s final. The Sailors (10-4), who won their pool after beating Mission Viejo earlier in the day, defeated Mater Dei, 21-25, 25-22, 15-9, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Newport Harbor beat Edison, 28-26, 23-25, 15-8. Cody Caldwell finished with 46 kills and Darren Leggett had 48 assists in the three matches.

Bryce Alderton A third-place finish in the Estancia Coast Classic hardly came easy for the Edison High boys basketball team Monday night against the Eagles playing in their own gym. No, Estancia (10-3), the designated home team, made the Chargers (9-2) earn their 51-43 win at the free-throw line. Edison converted 15 of 22 shots from the line while Estancia only attempted two and missed both. The Eagles tightened up on defense in the second half, cooling down the Chargers to 5-of-14 shooting (35.7%)

Kari Pestolesi came by some of her beach volleyball prowess as naturally as her golden tan. One might even suggest the source of the UC Irvine standout’s ample skills goes more than skin deep — to her DNA. Pestolesi’s mother, Diane, was a three-time All-American at the University of Hawaii, where her father, Tom, also twice earned All-American honors. Growing up in Huntington Beach, while Diane dabbled on the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals beach tour and Tom became a renowned coach at Estancia High, Newport Harbor and now Irvine Valley College, Kari and her two brothers, Tommy (who will be a junior on the Long Beach State men’s team)

Corona del Mar won its two matches and Newport Harbor split its two on the first day of the Orange County Boys' Volleyball Championships on Friday. The Sea Kings, playing at Edison High, defeated Laguna Beach (25-18, 25-10) and Woodbridge (25-16, 22-25, 15-13). Gus Ellis had 14 kills in the two matches, followed by Blaine Nielsen's 13 and Adam Smith's 10. Phil Bannon had 38 assists total. The Sailors, playing at home, defeated Mission Viejo (25-23, 25-10) and lost to Huntington Beach (21-25, 25-23, 16-14)

When most people see TJ Defalco play volleyball they get caught up in the way the Huntington Beach High outside hitter can jump high and hit so hard. They are amazed to find out he's only a junior and begin to think how great he and the Oilers will be next year. Never mind 2015. The scary thought is that unbeaten Huntington Beach is only going to get better this season. Playing with their No. 3 setter, Davis Gillett, who is a backup libero, the Oilers swept Corona del Mar, 25-23, 25-17, 26-24, to capture the OC Championships Division 1 title Monday at Edison High.

BOYS' SOCCER Estancia 1, Costa Mesa 0 Andy Ceja converted a free kick from about 18 yards out in the 62nd minute to propel the visiting Eagles in the Orange Coast League opener on Wednesday at Jim Scott Stadium. It's no shock that Edison High has had Newport Harbor High's number in Sunset League play. You have to go back 34 years for the Sailors' last win against the Chargers. How Edison continued its dominance against Newport Harbor surprised the Sailors on Friday. They expected a different quarterback to run around and a different running back to carry the load. None of that happened as the Sailors fell yet again to Edison, losing at home, 28-16. The Chargers, ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division poll, mixed up its ground game.

GIRLS' TENNIS California Team Classic CLOVIS — Corona del Mar High, seeded No. 5, won the 16-team Division I title with a pair of victories on Saturday at Buchanan High. The Sea Kings topped Mountain View St. Francis, 5-2, in the final after knocking off Cupertino Monta Vista, 4-3, in the semifinal, ending the school's 57-match win streak.. The CdM doubles duos of Kenzie Purcifell and Kimmia Naaseh, Siena Sharf and Jasie Dunk, as well as Taylor Fogarty and Erica Chen all went 4-0 in the tournament, while singles players Elena Fish (No. 3)

Jesse Sapolu gathered his big students Saturday morning at Edison High. "We're not coaching today," the former Pro Bowl center said, referring to himself and his coaching staff. "Today is about competition. " Sapolu, the Costa Mesa resident who won four Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers, conducts his Men In The Trenches lineman camp at Edison High. It's a 16-week program. Saturday was the midway point and time for a competition, the inaugural Bash by the Beach, a lineman challenge.

Orange Coast College sophomore defensive end Vince Coleman has signed a national letter of intent to continue his football career with Youngstown State, OCC Coach Mike Taylor announced Wednesday. Offensive lineman Kyle Finney and tight end Nolan Heyer are additional OCC sophomores headed for four-year programs, as is offensive tackle Andrew Albers, who previously had committed to Utah. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Coleman led the Pirates with 8.5 sacks and 15.5 of his 61 tackles were for losses in 2012.

Sage Hill School graduate Courtney Conlogue failed to advance out of the US Open of Surfing Women's Pro quarterfinals on Friday near the Huntington Beach Pier. Conlogue was in a quarterfinal heat with Malia Manuel of Hawaii, who she beat in the 2009 U.S. Open finals. This time, Manuel edged out the heat, 13.20-12.93. Conlogue was in the lead until the final seconds of the heat. Conlogue, a Santa Ana resident who is ranked No. 5 on the Assn. of Surfing Professionals women's World Championship Tour, finished in fifth place.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — On a rainy Monday, Newport Harbor High girls' soccer Coach Larry Draluck got some good news in the form of a text message. The message was from his senior forward and leading scorer, Josie Jogwe, who Draluck thought would be on a recruiting trip at Sacramento State. "She said somehow her flight got canceled," Draluck said. "She said she'd see me at the game. " The Sailors were at full strength for their showdown for first place in the Sunset League.

BOYS' VOLLEYBALL Orange County Championships HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor advanced to Monday's Gold Division final after winning three matches Saturday, including a semifinal victory over Back Bay rival Corona del Mar at Edison High. The Sailors defeated the Sea Kings, 25-21, 25-19 behind 16 kills and five digs from Cody Caldwell. Rusty Sary had eight kills and four digs, Ian Sequeira dished up 24 assists and Max Richley had a team-high seven digs.
