On the final day of its busiest weekend of the season, the UC Irvine men's basketball team made sure it had plenty of time to cruise. The Anteaters finished the opening half on a 12-0 run to claim a 21-point intermission advantage and went on to handle Eastern Washington, 81-58, in the finale of the three-game, three-day 2K Sports Classic at Bren Events Center. Freshman guard Luke Nelson had the breakout performance with a career-high 19 points, including five of the Anteaters' 11 three-pointers.

UCI men will face Eastern Washington in 10th annual BracketBusters contest on Feb. 18 at Bren Center. The UC Irvine men's basketball team will play host to Eastern Washington in the annual BracketBusters game Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Bren Events Center. This will be the eighth BracketBusters appearance for the Anteaters, who are 4-3 in previous matchups. UCI lost at Nevada, 74-63, last season. The 10th annual BracketBusters series has its largest field this year with 142 teams from 16 conferences.

FULLERTON -- Robyn Piotrowski scored twice to lead the UC Irvine women's soccer team a 2-0, season-opening win over Eastern Washington in the Soccer Town Classic at Titan Stadium in Fullerton Saturday. Piotrowski scored from 25 yards out to give the Anteaters a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Then she added another unassisted goal before halftime (38th minute) after Eastern Washington's goalie missed a kick to clear from the top of the box. Overall, Coach Marine Cano's Anteaters outshot the Eagles, 21-9.

Pierce 70 SAN LUIS OBISPO — Pirates sophomore guard Cortney Ford scored 30 points, one shy of her season high, in the semifinals of the Conoco Phillips Invitational Friday at Cuesta College. Freshman Simone Ibbotson chipped in 16 points to help the Pirates cruise into today’s 4 p.m. title game against Friday’s Cuesta-Chaffey winner. UCI Pregame vs. Boston University Saturday, 5:30 p.m. at Bren Events Center The Anteaters (3-2) have won three straight and will play the second of their three games in three days as part of the 2K Sports Classic Irvine Subregional. The visiting Terriers (2-2) were defeated by Eastern Washington, 80-68, in the first game of the event on Friday. Will Davis, a 6-foot-8 junior forward and the reigning Big West Conference Player of the Week, entered Friday's game topping UCI at 14.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest.

Orange Coast College defensive lineman Dean DeLeone will transfer to Arizona State, the school announced Wednesday. OCC wide receiver Cameron Hall will play at Stony Brook University and running back Kevin Ah-Hi will compete for a spot at Eastern Washington. DeLeone was named the Southern California National Division, Southern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year after racking up 78 total tackles (32 solo) with 15.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

SAN DIEGO — UC Irvine sophomore Patty Chawalitmetha shot two-under-par 70 to top the field and pace the Anteaters women’s golf team to the team lead after the first day of competition at Lady Azrec Fall Classic at the Salt Creek Golf Course Monday. UCI’s Kim Lorenzana shot 72 and joins Hawaii’s Lisa Kajihara in second place, heading into today’s final 18 holes. Freshman Sarah Fox (76 for 18th place), freshman Hillary Packard (79 for 50th) and senior Selaneé Henderson (89 for 100th)

UC Irvine's women's basketball team turned the ball over 24 times, including 11 in the second half, in an exhibition game against Love and Basketball Sunday and the miscues resulted in 27 points that helped carry Love and Basketball to a 72-55 victory at the Bren Events Center. Senior forward Christian Callaway led the Anteaters with 15 points and seven rebounds, but UCI was outscored, 43-21 in the second half, after building a 17-point lead at one point and taking a 34-29 lead into the halftime break.

UC Irvine pregame Vs. Eastern Washington Sunday, 2:05 p.m. The Anteaters (5-5) are on a two-game losing streak as they embark on a string of four straight road games. UCI defeated Eastern Washington, 81-58, at home on Nov. 24, and is looking to beat the Eagles (5-3) once again. In the first meeting, UCI made 11 of 19 three-point attempts and freshman guard Luke Nelson was five for seven from threedom on his way to a team-high 19 points. Four UCI players are averaging in double figures, led by senior guard Chris McNealy at 12.3 per game.

A cloth ladder was placed on the sand at Brookhurst, along with cones nearby and sticks strategically placed to cause cutting moves for Estancia High star running back Robert Murtha. Every Sunday for the past five weeks, Murtha has been going through an intense workout to prepare for an important senior season. This certainly isn't a day at the beach. He also hops over metal rings dug into the sand and closes the challenging training session with a 40-yard sprint while hooked up to a parachute.

IRVINE — For 12 months, Mikah Maly-Karros wasn’t allowed to compete in the game she loves most. It wasn’t until this week, the UC Irvine sophomore transfer from Loyola Marymount was able to have a basketball in her hands again during live action. It wasn’t until Saturday, she played in her Bren Events Center debut. Those who knew her became reacquainted with the 6-foot-1 forward with the strong post moves. The rest of the people discovered just how much she missed the game.
