SANTA BARBARA — One day after leaving the bases loaded in the ninth inning of a one-run loss, the UC Irvine baseball team turned the tables on host UC Santa Barbara Sunday, stranding three in the ninth to claim a 7-6 victory in the rubber game of the three-game Big West Conference series. UCI senior reliever Dylan Axelrod induced a game-ending flyout to right field to preserve the win, which gives the No. 18-ranked Anteaters (28-11-1, 7-5 in conference) the series victory over the Gauchos (17-20, 5-4)

BASEBALL UC Irvine 15, Loyola Marymount 15 LOS ANGELES — Nine innings, a combined 39 hits and 12 pitchers weren't enough to decide this nonconference game, which was called due to darkness Sunday and will not be resumed. The Lions had the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth when the umpires halted the game at four hours, 45 minutes. UCI freshman catcher Francis Larson went four for five — all doubles — with five RBIs, to lead a season-high 18-hit attack for the Anteaters (3-2-1)

IRVINE ? It's a good thing the UC Irvine baseball team has the week off from Big West Conference play. The Anteaters might be sleeping through the weekend. UC Irvine, playing the longest game in school history, scored two runs in the bottom of the 15th inning to defeat UNLV, 4-3, on Tuesday night at Anteater Ballpark. It marked UC Irvine's sixth consecutive victory and tenth out of the last 11. The Anteaters left 17 runners on base through 14 innings, but when the Rebels scored a run off reliever Dylan Axelrod in the top of the 15th, they responded.

Former UC Irvine pitcher Dylan Axelrod was recalled Tuesday by the Chicago White Sox, while D.J. Crumlich, a senior shortstop for the Anteaters in 2012, has signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. It's the third stint in the major leagues for Axelrod, who spent part of the 2011 baseball season with the White Sox, who also promoted him for a time earlier this season. The 6-foot, 195-pound right-hander was 0-1 with a 3.52 earned-run average in three games, including one start, in his first big-league assignment this season.

IRVINE — UC Irvine junior pitcher Wes Etheridge didn't have his best stuff Saturday night against visiting Long Beach State. "I thought I was average," Etheridge said. "The defense bailed me out a few times, and they were swinging at balls that weren't strikes." The Anteaters, however, will take an average performance any day, as long as Etheridge can keep lighting up zeroes on the scoreboard in Big West Conference play. He pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings, helping the Anteaters shut out the Dirtbags, 4-0, before 1,320 at Anteater Ballpark.

IRVINE — UC Irvine baseball coach Dave Serrano said his team continued its recent streak of playing out of character Tuesday night against visiting USC. But the Anteaters also showed they still have plenty of character in reserve, as they grinded their way to a 4-3 nonconference victory before 975 at Anteater Ballpark. "The game is testing us right now," said Serrano, whose squad lost two of three from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo over the weekend to end a streak of eight straight series wins and fall into sixth place in the eight-team Big West Conference.

FULLERTON — Six days after his first collegiate complete game, UC Irvine sophomore right-hander Scott Gorgen flirted with complete domination Thursday at Cal State Fullerton. Flirtation turned out to be a theme for the No. 23-ranked Anteaters in a wild 2-1 Big West Conference baseball victory over the No. 12-ranked Titans before 1,967 at Goodwin Field. After Gorgen, the Freshman Pitcher of the Year in the Big West Conference last season, outdueled junior Titans ace Wes Roemer, named the National Co-Player of the Year last year by Collegiate Baseball, for 8 1/2 innings, UCI Coach Dave Serrano elected to go with former All-American closer Blair Erickson to start the bottom of the ninth.

ROUND ROCK, Texas — Postseason for the UC Irvine baseball team was extended Sunday night, but not exactly the way the Anteaters had in mind. Game 6 of the NCAA Regional at Dell Diamond was suspended after an 84-minute rain delay with the Anteaters leading, 6-5, in the bottom of the seventh inning. The game will be resumed from that point, today at 11 a.m. If the Anteaters win, they will advance to the Super Regional against either Wichita State or Arizona, the only two teams left competing in the Wichita Regional.

IRVINE ? It all came together Tuesday night for the UC Irvine baseball team. On a night when there was a groundbreaking ceremony for a new clubhouse at Anteater Ballpark, UC Irvine received shutout pitching from four different hurlers plus timely execution on offense to complete a season sweep of USC with a 5-0 nonconference victory. It marked the first time since the program resurrected in 2002 that UC Irvine (22-16) has swept the season series with USC (22-17). When the teams met March 7, it took the Anteaters five hours and 24 minutes to beat the Trojans, 10-9, in 13 innings at Dedeaux Field.

WICHITA, Kan. — UC Irvine junior pitcher Wes Etheridge used the kelly green artificial turf infield at Wichita State as his personal pool table Sunday, allowing the Anteaters to pocket the program's most meaningful Division I victory to date. Etheridge, who favors the sinkerball, induced 17 ground-ball outs, turning true hops on the closely cropped turf into yet another truly amazing mound performance for the College World Series-bound Anteaters (45-15-1). Led by Etheridge and sophomore starter Scott Gorgen, the UCI pitching staff has fashioned an earned-run average of 1.40 in five postseason games.

WICHITA, Kan. — The biggest victory in the Division I history of the UC Irvine baseball team was all about reversal. The first reversal — an overturned out call at first base that set up a dramatic two-run ninth-inning Wichita State rally that tied the score — was soon trumped by a one-out rally by the No. 4-ranked Anteaters (45-15-1) that reversed the good vibrations emanating from Shocker Nation. And, also led to a fist-pumping 3-2 victory Sunday to sweep the best-of-three Super Regional before 8,153 at Eck Stadium.

IRVINE ? Even in the midst of the program's longest winning streak since 1990, the UC Irvine baseball team was not without worry Saturday against Big West Conference visitor Pacific. Anteaters Coach Dave Serrano was concerned that his team was beginning to take its recent success for granted. And All-American junior closer Blair Erickson was just plain doubting himself, as the Tigers trimmed the lead to one run with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth. But UCI prevailed, 6-3, to extend its winning streak to nine and post its 13th win in the last 14 games.
