Newport Harbor High girls’ water polo coach Bill Barnett knows it’s the Southern California Invitational later this month that holds the most weight for CIF seedings. In terms of a purely strong field, however, the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions can’t be beat. “Overall, it’s probably the strongest tournament in Southern California,” Barnett said of the two-day tournament that also includes CdM and begins today at Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos high schools.

At about 10 a.m. Friday, Kathryn Poet boarded a bus for Santa Barbara. The junior and her Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy softball teammates were headed to Dos Pueblos High, the site of the Tologs' first CIF Southern Section playoff appearance since joining the Mission League. Once the Tologs stepped onto the field, Poet did what she's done all year. She was an exemplary leader. She occupied the top of the order and added to her team-best totals in several offensive categories.

Vanguard men's and women's cross country coach Bryan Wilkins will begin his 17th year with the program this fall with six recruits. According to the Vanguard athletic department, Wilkins recently signed five new athletes to the women's roster and one additional runner to the men's team, ranked as high as 15th in the NAIA last year. The loss of four strong runners from last year's men's team leaves a large hole to fill, but Wilkins attracted a freshman from Spokane, Wash.

Players for the Newport Harbor High and Corona del Mar girls' water polo teams didn't have to wait too long to battle again. The Sailors and Sea Kings will most likely play for the second time this season Friday, at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions. Newport Harbor (10-1) and CdM (7-4) are seeded fourth and fifth, respectively. They're both in Group D in the loaded 16-team tournament. If the Sailors can get past Long Beach Wilson in their first game and the Sea Kings can dispatch Corona Santiago, the Back Bay rivals will meet in a quarterfinal at 6:30 p.m. at Dos Pueblos High.

GOLETA — “No, no, no, no,” Newport Harbor High girls’ water polo coach Bill Barnett said to senior goalie Morgan Vickers midway through the Sailors’ first-round game at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on Friday. Vickers had just made an apparently not-Barnett-approved pass in the middle of the pool to sophomore teammate Kate Klippert. But she was quick with a counter to her coach, reminding him that at least the pass was technically sound.

Sure, the drive up Highway 101 is scenic, but this weekend's prestigious Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions girls' water polo tournament is far from a vacation. Fifteen of the 16 teams entered are ranked in CIF Southern Section Division 1 or Division 2. For Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor, the tournament provides a chance to move up in the Division 1 rankings. CdM is ranked No. 3, and Newport No. 4, behind Foothill and Laguna Beach. But if the seedings hold, it will be the Back Bay teams meeting in the tournament semifinals on Saturday.

GOLETA — Coach Bill Barnett repeatedly yelled at Presley Pender to shoot the ball. Pender did not shoot the ball. Instead she passed to her fellow junior, Maddy McLaren, at the far post. IRVINE — If you checked out the scoreboard in the second period, you might have thought the movie “The Matrix” was on. Undetectable numbers and letters showed up. Blaring out of the speakers was an unbearable sound, ringing that hurt your ear drums as much as getting ear problems underwater. Someone unplugged the scoreboard, the sound. Dos Pueblos High of Goleta unplugged the Newport Harbor girls’ water polo season Wednesday night. The Sailors never figured out the scoreboard in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.

SANTA BARBARA — Unhappy with his team’s defensive effort, Corona del Mar High Coach Aaron Chaney let his players know it at halftime. CdM was down by three goals Friday to Laguna Beach in a Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions quarterfinal, and things appeared bleak. Peotter scored the game-winning goal with 20 seconds left, lifting CdM to a 6-5, come-from-behind win at Santa Barbara High and into today’s semifinals.
