Blake Bakkila said she's a more complete tennis player in her senior year at Newport Harbor High. Part of it may be natural progression for the Sailors' No. 1 singles player, but part of it is also because she didn't have a choice. For a few months earlier this year, Bakkila's biggest weapon - her two-handed backhand - just wasn't an option. This was because Bakkila had surgery on her left wrist in March to take care of some torn ligaments. "Toward the end of the season and beginning of CIF [last year]

NEWPORT BEACH - The high-tech scoreboard is not currently working at the Newport Harbor High pool. The score was kept at the table during Tuesday afternoon's nonleague game against Long Beach Wilson. Each time one of the teams found the back of the net, someone at the scorer's desk flipped over a red or blue number to show the updated tally. Every so often someone would walk over from the bleachers to glance at the score. In the first half, it wasn't really necessary.

Defending CIF Southern Section Division II champion Corona del Mar High was ranked atop the division in preaseason boys' water polo polls released Monday by the Southern Section. Newport Harbor is ranked No. 2 in Division I, behind defending champion Mater Dei. Corona del Mar edged Murrieta Valley, 11-10, last November to win its Orange County-record 13th CIF title, its first in nine years. But CdM graduated nearly all of its top players from that team, including Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Player of the Year Chase Watson (USC)

Corona del Mar High senior middle blocker Spencer Haly earned the CIF Southern Section Division II Player of the Year award and Steve Conti was named the Coach of the Year for leading the boys' volleyball team to its seventh section title in the program's history. Joining Haly and Conti on the All-CIF team were outside hitters Brennan Anderson and Parker Brown. The four contributed to a special season in which the Sea Kings (32-4, 10-0 in league) also claimed the Pacific Coast League title, the CIF Southern California Regional Division II title and the ESPN RISE national title.

When Spencer Haly arrived at Corona del Mar High four years ago, he planned to play three sports. His parents got involved with athletics during their high school years and he followed their footsteps. Haly's father, Gregg, was a three-sport athlete at Foothill. His mom, Mary Ann, played volleyball at CdM. It made sense for Haly to participate in two of dad's sports, football and basketball, and mom's favorite. The one sport Gregg competed in high school that Haly did not have an interest in at CdM was baseball.

CORONA DEL MAR — The Corona del Mar High boys' volleyball team earned what Coach Steve Conti called a shot at redemption. The Sea Kings will again get to play Santa Margarita, only one of three teams than handed CdM a loss this season. Second-seeded CdM opened the CIF Southern California Regional Division II playoffs at home with a 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 victory against Westview of San Diego on Tuesday. At times, the match lacked the energy CdM displayed Saturday, when it won the CIF Southern Section Division II title against Laguna Beach.

CORONA DEL MAR — The Corona del Mar High boys' volleyball team ruined one opponent's prom last Saturday by claiming the CIF Southern Section Division II title. The Sea Kings wrecked another one. This time, they did so to get a chance to play for another postseason title. You cannot say host CdM did not accommodate Santa Margarita on Wednesday. The Sea Kings moved the CIF Southern California Regional Division II semifinal a day early because the Eagles had their prom on Thursday, the original date of the match.

Exactly a week ago, Coach Steve Conti knew the Corona del Mar High boys' volleyball team earned two more guaranteed matches. One was in the CIF Southern Section Division II title match and the other in the opening round of the CIF Southern California Regional Division II playoffs. The second match caused Conti to worry. He did not want his Sea Kings to take Saturday's section final against defending champion Laguna Beach lightly. "They knew we had an opportunity to maybe compete against Mater Dei and Santa Margarita [in the regional playoffs]

NORWALK — Newport Harbor High junior Ethan Cochran had the most crowd support of any competitor as he stepped into the ring for his first attempt at the discus Saturday afternoon at Cerritos College. In addition to his Sailors coaches and teammates, Cochran said his mother, two uncles, an aunt and a cousin were on hand to watch the CIF Southern Section track and field divisional finals. The applause died down for Cochran's first attempt. Seconds later it came again, even louder than before.

The time has come for Corona del Mar High and Laguna Beach to meet in a CIF Southern Section boys' volleyball title match. The two rival schools have never played each other on this stage when it comes to boys' action. The winner becomes the first boys' program in the section to seven crowns. Saturday's Division II final pins No. 1 against No. 2 at Cypress College at 4:30 p.m. This is how the playoff committee drew it up during the pairings, giving CdM the top seed and Laguna Beach the second seed.
