Richard Dunn IRVINE - In a game with more ups and downs than a wild day on Wall Street, Estancia High's Eagles barely missed the closing bell Tuesday night. In the end, it came down to the free-throw line and Diamond Bar's 6-foot-8 center, Mark Lecmen, who provided the winning margin with 0:03 left on the clock as the Eagles absorbed a 53-52 setback in the opening round of the Irvine World News Tournament at Woodbridge High. Lecmen, also a pitcher in baseball whose fastball has been clocked at 94 mph, missed the first of two free throws with the game deadlocked, 52-52, then Estancia Coach Chris Sorce iced him with a timeout.

Barry Faulkner The Upland High football team had its season-ending banquet Sunday night. Celebration, however, was hardly the theme, despite a 12-2 season which included a Baseline League championship and a trip to the CIF Southern Section Division II title game. Coach Tom Salter's Highlanders were defeated in the championship game, 17-14, by defending champion Diamond Bar. But the winning touchdown drive, late in the fourth quarter, was helped along when officials errantly awarded Diamond Bar a fifth down.

Corona del Mar High's boys basketball team stunned host Arroyo Grande in the first round of the Eagles' holiday tournament and recorded a 61-54 victory in pool play Wednesday. Coach Ryan Curry's Sea Kings, down by nine in the second quarter, were ignited by Reid Watanabe's steal in the third quarter and the momentum swung 180 degrees as Arroyo Grande melted under a 22-11 CdM run. "His steal really ignited us," said Curry. "All of a sudden we just picked up. It was a huge lift and all of a sudden Arroyo Grande was under the pressure."
