Mauve is just the answer for hipsters looking for underrepresented or undiscovered brands in a wide range of prices. The Newport Beach boutique is casual and unpretentious. Mauve's been compared with the Closet, another great trendsetting store for men and women. Owner Joshua Ritchie seeks out niche brands and limits quantities to keep apparel fresh. It's a great place to find upscale casual and premium street wear for men. Hot sellers include Stussy for men, Rogue Status, Mighty Healthy, Atwater and Obey.

The sun was shining early Thursday morning — another sign that spring and summer are on the horizon. So how will you dress yourself for the sunny days to come? Newport-Mesa retailers say dresses are popular so far. For men, it's clean lines and a more tailored look rather than the baggy duds. Black may never go out of style, but bright colors line the racks of local shops with colored denim and sunny prints. "I think fashion swings on a pendulum … it has been darker, there've been neutrals and white — although white is a really big trend this season too — it's become a color," Bianchi said.

Holland is known for windmills, clogs and the sinful streets of Amsterdam. But denim jeans? Niet zo dat veel! A Dutch jean company has come to Orange County and is trying to make inroads into the high-end denim retail market. While most of couture jean companies are based in Italy, G-star is hoping to hawk its pricey denim line with a back-to-basics campaign focusing on the jeans themselves. That means practically no advertising and lots and lots of jeans. Walk into the Fashion Island store and the entire wall is stacked to the ceiling with denim ?

LOLITA HARPER I hope you are reading this at the breakfast table in your bathrobe. If so, I have caught you in time. Forget the outfit you had laid out for yourself last night. Go back to the closet and pull out your jeans. That's right, jeans. Low rise, high waters, slim fit or baggy, it doesn't matter -- just put them on if you believe in victims' rights. Students at Vanguard University will be doing so, as they observe a moment of silence in the middle of campus to dispel myths regarding rape and to show survivors of such attacks that they aren't alone.

JUNE CASAGRANDE I'm a little more focused on business today than on language. One business in particular is on my mind: the Gap. I was actually trying to focus on language at the exact moment when the Gap got my goat. Taped to my front door, as I headed out to work, was a note to myself -- a reminder about some grammar issues. The note, actually scribbled on a used envelope, said, "snuck, dreamt, pled vs. pleaded, burned/burnt." This note was to help me remember some fodder for the grammar column I knew I'd write today (today meaning Friday)
