The UC Irvine baseball team has won 13 of its last 15 games as it gives chase to an NCAA Regional berth. And those in search of a reason behind the late-season surge need only look toward the center of the diamond. A steady stream of quality work on the bump has helped put the Anteaters closer to navigating the postseason hump that proved too great a challenge for them last year under then-first-year coach Dave Serrano. The Anteaters' nine-game winning streak came to an end Sunday in a 4-1 loss to Pacific, but a string of 16 straight starts in which the starter has given up no more than three earned runs continues.

Barry Faulkner As expected, UC Irvine failed to earn a berth in the NCAA Division I baseball regionals, an occurrence first-year coach Dave Serrano vows will be the exception to the rule for the Anteaters. "This program has everything it needs to be in the regionals and we should be in the regionals," said Serrano, whose squad went 31-25, 10-11 in the Big West Conference, where it finished fifth. "I will feel like a failure in my coaching career unless I have this program in the regionals each and every year.

Barry Faulkner Though UC Irvine baseball coach Dave Serrano slept on his decision whether to start Steve Schroer or Jimmy Alstot Saturday against visiting UC Davis, he probably couldn't have dreamed of a better performance by both. The senior right-handed pitchers combined on a eight-hit shutout, teaming for 10 strikeouts to pace a 7-0 nonconference win that clinched the series victory for the Anteaters. Schroer made his ninth start of the season and worked into the seventh, coming up two outs shy of matching the longest outing of his career.

The UC Irvine baseball team reached territory it hadn't seen in 27 years when Collegiate Baseball tabbed the squad 36th among the publication's "Fabulous 40" preseason poll. It is the first time the Anteaters have been ranked in a preseason poll since UCI joined Division I for the 1977-78 season. UCI relief pitcher Blair Erickson earned individual recognition when he was tabbed "Louisville Slugger" preseason third-team All-America by Collegiate Baseball.

DON CANTRELL Many golfers may dream of hitting a hole-in-one, but it generally remains nothing more than a wishful picture. Jim Newkirk, 67, a great baseball pitcher and football lineman during the mid-1950s at Newport Harbor High and Orange Coast College, never thought much about golf or a hole-in-one until after he had turned 40. His dad, Jim Sr., introduced him to golf and son Jim expressed interest since...

Two former Cal State Fullerton Titans are the final two additions to the UC Irvine baseball coaching staff, announced by Anteaters' head coach Dave Serrano on Monday. Sergio Brown and Chad Baum reunite with Serrano, who was hired by UCI earlier this month to replace former head man John Savage, who took the head coaching position at UCLA. Serrano served as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Cal State Fullerton the past eight years. Brown, who will work with the infielders and be in charge of recruiting, joins UCI after serving as Fullerton's director of baseball operations for two years (2001-'03)

Steve Virgen Before Dave Serrano was introduced as UC Irvine's new baseball coach Monday, he was working the phones on Sunday, reassuring his players that everything would be OK. The Anteaters, who lost their coach, John Savage, to UCLA July 1, were informed they would be getting a new coach who was an assistant for 2004 NCAA champion Cal State Fullerton. UCI was also acquiring the asset that ushered the new era of Anteater baseball: pitching. Serrano, who was a pitching coach and lead recruiting coordinator at Cal State Fullerton, said he was proud to be UCI's new baseball coach at a press conference at the Bren Events Center Monday, where he was officially sworn in a day after the announcement came.
