There are few structures or buildings named after living human beings, let alone a facility with the name of the o7 opposingf7 football coach written in big block letters. But that's just what Corona del Mar High's football team sees this week. There is no escaping Dave Holland. Holland, the former CdM coach who led the Sea Kings to back-to-back CIF Southern Section Division VI titles in 1988 and '89, was honored by the program when the CdM football weight room was named after him in the mid-90s.

The Estancia High football team lost several key players and a top assistant in the off-season. Most of the players graduated and one moved out of town. As for the assistant, Coach Mike Bargas said, he just grew tired of coaching and he dealt with medical issues. He doesn't blame the assistant for not coming back to the Eagles. The assistant is the same man who gave Bargas sound advice six years ago. He told Bargas that it was time for Bargas to become a head coach. That man was Dave Holland.

Estancia High football coach Mike Bargas was cautious about revealing too much of the defensive plan Eagles coordinator Dave Holland is preparing for tonight’s 7 o’clock nonleague game against Magnolia. But there is virtually zero mystery about the offensive plan utilized by the Sentinels (0-2), coached by former Estancia and Costa Mesa head man Dave Perkins. “They’re fairly one-dimensional,” Bargas said of the smashmouth double wing scheme Magnolia will deploy at La Palma Park’s Glover Stadium.

Barry Faulkner NEWPORT BEACH - Years of often contentious releaguing meetings have finally come to this for the Corona del Mar High football team. So, when the Sea Kings are officially initiated as members of the Pacific Coast League, tonight at 7 o'clock against Laguna Beach at Newport Harbor High, Coach Dick Freeman can only hope his team makes years of lobbying to leave the Sea View League worth while. "If we don't win this week ...," said Freeman, whose 0-5 squad takes on a league foe with fewer students for the first time since it shared Sea View League membership with Laguna Beach in 1985.

Deirdre Newman Doug Orr personified the heart and soul of an athlete who did not let his physical limitations deter him from pursuing his passion. Orr, 50, a lifelong Corona del Mar resident who graduated from the high school in 1970, died of heart failure on Wednesday. Orr had been the voice of the Sea Kings for the past four years. His unwavering commitment to the school will be missed, said Jerry Jelnick, athletic director. "His interest was a love of the school and the athletic teams and all the coaches and players," Jelnick said.

They were the defending CIF Southern Section Division VI champions, unbeaten, with more than two dozen returnees, and hopes were high as the 1989 high school football season approached. Yet they would put their coach, Dave Holland, on an elevator ride for the ages. Corona del Mar's Sea Kings, 12-0-2 a year earlier, were beaten in their season opener, beaten in their league opener, beaten in the Battle of the Bay showdown with Newport Harbor and finished fourth in the Sea View League with a nondescript 2-3 record.

His high school football team was on the verge of the most significant victory in Newport-Mesa Unified School District history that December night at Orange Coast College, but the best was yet to come. Corona del Mar High's Sea Kings had forged a 10-point lead over the defending CIF Southern Section Division VI champion, Valencia, and time was running out when a junior reserve named Phil Holland made his way onto the field as part of CdM's punt coverage and the coach jogged onto the field for last-second advice.

ROGER CARLSON Dave Holland has always been one to stick to a schedule. He weighs his options, then strikes. His decision to go for it even before his Corona del Mar High football team had completed its second touchdown march to narrow the deficit to 14-13 against highly favored Newport Harbor in a Sea View League finale in 1985 is a good case in point. "There was no doubt," recalled Holland, "we're going to score here and go for two. Some people thought I was taking our kids out of a tie, but it was one of those things, we were in a zone and, OK, we're doing it."

Roger Carlson Someone once asked what was the most exciting moment for me when I was a sportswriter for the Daily Pilot, covering high school football from 1964 to 1988, before I left the press box for a soap box as the newspaper's sports editor. The answer was, "Twenty-five years." Too many personalities, too many accomplishments and too many nights to remember defy a top 10 list. But there is a defining moment, each year, right about now as Labor Day slips by and the openers await.
