Friday's showers gave way Saturday, but the conditions weren't any easier for the Toshiba Classic field at the Newport Beach Country Club. Judging from the scores, the conditions were a little tougher on the golfers. Though Friday's top score was Bob Eastwood's six-under-par 65, Saturday's was 67, shot by Tom Purtzer, Jay Haas, Allen Doyle, Jose Maria Canizares and Mike McCullough. Canizares had the tournament's first hole-in-one on the eighth, when he used a five-iron to hit the ball 187 yards into the cup. Purtzer, who shot a 68 on Friday, has a two-day score of 135 and goes into today's action tied for the lead with Bob Eastwood and Graham Marsh.

Bryce Alderton Newport Beach Country Club head professional Paul Hahn said he "never got into his game" and finished 7-over-par 78 in Saturday's second round of the Toshiba Senior Classic. Hahn, making his second Toshiba appearance, sits at 12-over 154 after two rounds following a 5-over 76 Friday at Newport Beach Country Club. "Am I tournament ready? No," Hahn said. "My last real tournament was Toshiba last year, if you don't count the Jones Cup."

Bryce Alderton NEWPORT BEACH -- What better way to take the task of putting away than to hole your approach shot after hitting into a greenside bunker on an adjacent hole? Well, Vicente Fernandez scrambled, but still birdied the 416-yard par-4 10th in roaring fashion. Fernandez drove right and into the greenside bunker of the par-4 sixth hole off the 10th tee. He punched his second shot between two trees and left himself about 80 yards from the green.
