NEWPORT BEACH — Sheer madness at the end. In a matter of seconds, Newport Harbor High won a football game, then thought it lost it, only to learn it had won it. Throughout it all, the Sailors never kicked themselves Friday night. Dana Hills did. Once. Twice. Then for a third and fourth time. The Dolphins’ kicking game failed. The Sailors held on for a 25-24 nonleague victory after Conner St. Clair’s 35-yard field-goal attempt barely missed winning it for the Dolphins with no time left at Davidson Field.

Prior to the playoffs, Cole Norris received a text. The quarterback guru Norris works out with outside of Newport Harbor High sent him a message. Norris isn't one to look past an opponent, but he made sure to save that text from Steve Calhoun. He believed the information in that text might come in handy if the Sailors won at Dana Hills in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division playoffs. "If we beat Dana Hills, he knew we would have to face La Habra next," Norris says of Calhoun, who as the offensive coordinator at Buena Park is familiar with La Habra as both teams are in the Freeway League.

The days leading up to Newport Harbor High's playoff opener, Garrett Hall split the tailback duties in practice. Coaches never disclosed which of the two backs might carry the load with starter Chance Siemonsma out with a leg injury. The start in the backfield didn't go to Hall. From the sideline, he watched Riley Gaddis get the nod at running back in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division playoffs at Dana Hills last week. Hall rooted him on. When Hall earned his shot to run at the start of the second quarter, he made the most of it. He carried the ball seven times for 38 yards during the Sailors' 10-play, 83-yard scoring drive that gave Newport Harbor its first lead.

Newport Harbor High senior Mitchell Mendoza is usually pretty reserved, but not on Saturday. After walking the ball in from the right side, he scored cross-cage. He then violently splashed the water, in the direction of some of his friends on the east side of the Sailors' pool deck. Mendoza's goal early in the third quarter of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinal game gave the Sailors a one-goal lead on Dana Hills. He celebrated again after scoring on a counterattack on Chad Sheldon's pass, then again after scoring near-side on a six-on-five chance later in the quarter.

DANA POINT - The Newport Harbor High football team went into Friday down. Marred by injuries to their starting tailback, tight end and defensive end, the Sailors couldn't afford to lose any more players. Yet, two more went down in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division playoffs at Dana Hills. Ramsey Hufford, a two-way standout lineman, hurt his ankle late in the first half, and then star quarterback Cole Norris left after he got the wind knocked out of him in the third quarter.

Newport Harbor High Coach Jeff Brinkley was disappointed about how the Sailors ended the regular season. A loss with a chance at a share of the Sunset League title wasn't the way he wanted Newport Harbor to finish. But the Sailors have a chance for redemption in the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division playoffs. Newport Harbor (5-5) is one of five Newport-Mesa area teams in the playoffs, which begin Friday. "You obviously don't want to go out like that," said Brinkley, whose team opens at Dana Hills (5-5)
