CYPRESS - The Orange Coast College women's basketball team opened the game with a 17-2 run and coasted to a 76-63 Orange Empire Conference victory over host Cypress Friday. Sophomore Kyra Melville led the Pirates (16-5, 3-1 in the OEC) with 19 points, while freshman guard Lindsey Galasso hit 3 of 6 three-pointers to finish with 13 points. OCC freshman Candice Quiroz chipped in 12 points, while freshman Liz Mendoza contributed 10 points. Cypress, which shot 37% from the field, 21 of 56, dropped to 10-10, 2-2. The Pirates hit 30 of 48 from the field (62%)

COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College men's basketball team led by as many as 22 points, but Orange Empire Conference visitor Cypress cut the lead to three in the second half, before the Pirates claimed an 88-78 triumph Saturday night. Cypress, trailing at halftime, 44-26, hit 19 of 41 second-half field-goal attempts, while OCC was connecting on just 7 of 18, to make things more interesting than the Pirates would have liked. OCC got 17 points from Nick Burwell and Ryan Webster, each of whom sank a trio of three-pointers.

CYPRESS -- Orange Coast College's women's basketball team was a 58-46 Orange Empire Conference winner over host Cypress Wednesday night, with the three-point shot the big factor. The Pirates nailed 8 of 20 from the perimeter, with Nancy Hatsushi (four) and Lindsey Galasso and Liz Mendoza (two each) accounting for the edge. Coast, now 24-5, 9-2 in the OEC, jumped to a 24-20 halftime lead with a 9-0 edge on three-pointers. Hatsushi, a product of Costa Mesa High, led all scorers with 16 points, and had five assists.

Chad Delaney, who was five for nine from three-point range, contributed 28 points to help OCC improve to 8-11, 2-2 in conference. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Cypress 73, Orange Coast 71 COSTA MESA — The Chargers’ Debbie Chavez scored the winning basket after an offensive rebound with one second left in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday night.

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team made 8 of 18 three-point attempts to help secure a 57-51 Orange Empire Conference win over Cypress Friday. Jillian Ricks had a game-high 17 points for the Pirates (18-2, 2-0 in conference), who received eight points and 16 rebounds from Madison Parks. Ricks was among five different Pirates to connect from three-point range, including Teeya Fernandez, Valerie Katayama and Meghan Maxwell, who drained two apiece. Cypress fell to 15-4, 1-1. PALM DESERT - Jennifer Tunzi had a two-day score of 165 (85-80) to lead Orange Coast College to a second-place showing at the Cypress College Invitational, played at Woodhaven Country Club, par 70. The other top-10 finisher for the Pirates was Robin Shaft, whose two-day score of 168 (84-84) was good enough for ninth place. OCC had a team score of 682. Mt. San Antonio College was the tournament winner with a team total of 650. Mt. SAC's Rosalin Chung was the tournament medalist with a 148 (77-71)

Tony Altobelli CYPRESS - The road has not suited the Orange Coast College baseball team very well in Orange Empire Conference action. Strapped with an unusual five-game stretch away from Wendell Pickens Field, the Pirates lost their third straight OEC road game, 15-7, to host Cypress. The loss is the fifth in a row for OCC (5-11, 0-5 in conference) as the team's earned run average continues to soar. Eric Wiethorn went 2 for 5 including his third home run of the season and had two RBIs, while Chris Laws went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Orange Coast College's men's basketball team saw a 44-30 lead with 18:45 left melt to 49-49, but held on to post a 74-71 Orange Empire Conference victory Wednesday night at Cypress. Stephon Seales hit two free throws with 0:48 left to push the lead to 74-68 for OCC (18-11, 6-5). Kevin Cook of Cypress hit a three-pointer and the hosts (7-19, 2-9) had the ball with 3.5 seconds left, but couldn't get a shot off. Aaron Bobik led OCC's Pirates with 20 points.

COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College women's water polo team, ranked No. 1 in the state, defeated visiting Cypress, 13-3, Wednesday in an Orange Empire Conference game. Nicole Sonnenfeld and Devon Wright scored three goals each for OCC (22-0, 5-0 in conference), leading a contingent of nine different players to reach inside the cage. Cypress fell to 13-13, 2-4. Orange Coast has won 16 of its 22 games by at least nine goals. Neisha Hoagland and Erica Anderson each had three assists for the Pirates, while Wright and Christine McDonald had two apiece.
