Where’s it at: Royal Khyber Fine Indian Cuisine, 1621 W. Sunflower Ave., (714) 436-1010. What’s in it: The restaurant is offering a three-course dinner with the restaurant’s signature dishes and tickets to “Slumdog Millionaire,” which can be seen at the neighboring Regency Theatre. One of the entrée selections is the restaurant’s specialty, the Khyber’s Nectar, which is a braised lamb shank cooked in a secret recipe for 14 hours.

Restaurateur Jenny Ross, chef/owner of 118 Degrees Restaurant in Costa Mesa has taken her original recipes and pioneering spirit to Whole Foods Market at The District in Tustin where the Raw Bar, a new counter featuring raw foods, is now open. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 8, 2010, Chef Jenny will host a Grand Opening event at the new Raw Bar counter within the store that will allow guests to sample delicious raw cuisine inspired by her experience in the field of living foods.

Stephen Santacroce I am often disappointed when I hear friends or acquaintances dismissing whole categories of ethnic cuisines based on broad generalizations. Phrases such as "I don't like French food -- too many cream sauces" or "Mexican food is too fattening with all the rice and beans" are used to characterize unfairly the offerings of entire nations. Unfortunately, generalizations such as these do as much of a disservice to a country's cuisine as do other cultural stereotypes that we strive so hard to avoid.

Stephen Santacroce As I review more and more restaurants, I find that there are different restaurants for different moods. There are romantic restaurants, formal restaurants, places to hang out with the guys, restaurants suited for intimate gatherings and those better suited for larger groups. Thaifoon, the new Asian eatery in Fashion Island, fits squarely into the last category. The idea of Scottsdale-based Desert Island Restaurants CEO Randy Schoch, Thaifoon is a large, bustling restaurant with a casual atmosphere and an emphasis on sharing.

Stephen Santacroce Probably the first introduction I got to foreign cuisine was Chinese food. OK, I have to caveat that, because I grew up back East in a predominantly Italian American neighborhood where every other corner sported an Italian restaurant or pizza parlor. But we didn't consider Italian food as foreign, and for us Chinese was as exotic as it got. And I was not unique. For millions of Americans, Chinese restaurants in the 1960s offered a chance to experience something different at reasonable prices.

Pat Neisser I've always wanted to visit the Deep South, but I never suspected I could do so while sailing on a charming small ship. While reading through brochures, I found just the right match. Intrav had an Antebellum Cruise available: seven days cruising along the shores of South Carolina and Georgia -- with stops in Charleston, Beaufort, Savannah, Brunswick and the islands -- before ending in Jacksonville, Fla. I flew to Charleston a few days early to stay at the lovely Charleston Place Hotel, an Orient Express property.

Visitors at Fashion Island on Saturday appeared to be stuck in a time warp. Parents paused beside chic - and high-tech - strollers, taking pictures with cell phones. The scene in front of them, though, seemed straight out of medieval Europe. Traditional Italian flag-bearers, dressed in colorful leotards and tunics, strode onto the grassy knoll outside Bloomingdale's, clutching intricately designed silk panels that fluttered atop staffs. Flanked by two similarly clad female helpers and a drummer, they executed an athletic and highly synchronized aerial ballet.

NEWPORT BEACH - Chef Pascal Olhats is closing the doors to Tradition by Pascal on Feb. 15 after a nearly 25-year run, but the restaurateur is keeping a close hold on his apron. "It's not easy," he said of closing the popular, upscale French cuisine establishment on North Bristol Street. "I don't close for failure; I close for a decision I want to make while I'm on top. It's a positive thing for me - I see it as an achievement. " Other restaurants Olhats operates, including Pascal Épicerie and Café Jardin, as well as those for which he consults, including French 75, Brasserie Pascal and Savannah Chop House, will remain open.

COSTA MESA — Thanks to local restaurateurs' bountiful plates and diverse menu options, Costa Mesa is on the road to becoming a nationally recognized food destination. The city was named a finalist in the Rand McNally/USA Today Best of the Road competition for "Best in Food" category, said Kim Glen, spokeswoman for the Costa Mesa Conference and Visitor Bureau. "We submitted Costa Mesa because we think it's an incredible opportunity for the city," Glen said. It consists of five different categories: "Best Food," "Most Beautiful," Most Patriotic," "Most Fun" and "Friendliest.

The Irvine Co. announced the opening of a new retail store and a restaurant at two of its Orange County shopping centers, according to separate news releases. Brandy Melville, a women's apparel line from Italy, recently opened its first Orange County location at Fashion Island near Nordstrom, according to a Fashion Island news release. The clothier is popular for its beachy, chic styles in soft comfortable fabrics, according to the release. O Fine Japanese Cuisine opened its second Orange County location in the Quail Hill Village Center in Irvine last week, according to the Irvine Co. The 4,000 square-foot restaurant features a 20-seat sushi bar and a 10-foot waterfall.

L aguna Beach has its own Jamie Oliver. Azmin Ghahreman, a chef and the owner of Sapphire Laguna, started a local food revolution long before "The Naked Chef" hit primetime. Three years ago, Ghahreman began visiting schools to educate children about healthy foods and cooking. A parent of three, Ghahreman said he was inspired to give all children the tools they need to make wiser food choices to ensure better health and a brighter future. "Child obesity has become a huge problem," he said.

Starting next week, they will review Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach restaurants on a rotating basis. It’s always exciting when a new restaurant opens in Laguna Beach. “O” Fine Japanese Cuisine is the latest on the scene, tucked away in the Albertsons shopping center in a beautiful space they have created from an empty storefront. The forward-looking design is accented by dramatic blue lighting from large, round ceiling soffits meant to evoke the sea. In addition to brick walls are black wood panels with white wavy accents.

Tucked away on a quiet side street off Pacific Coast Highway, Michiko Soffer’s Nesai restaurant, at 217 Riverside Ave., is biting into Newport Beach Restaurant Week for the first time. Its menu features grilled artichokes and coffee-braised beef brisket. “I tried to pick things that I felt were unique and popular to the restaurant,” Soffer said. Restaurant Week returns to Newport Beach today with prix-fixe menus at more than 50 local restaurants. Some, like Nesai, are new to the Restaurant Week roster, while others are repeat customers.
