The Costa Mesa National Little League Padres collected a season-high 22 hits in a 14-4 win over the Phillies May 8 to remain in first place in the Majors division. Gian-Paul Stebbins, Kevin Thomas, Ryan Cherney, Marc DeFrenza, Colin Kincaid, Eusebio Castillo, Jesse Fox, Jesus Rodriguez, Ryan Burns, Daniel Derieg and Jesse Fox each had at least one hit. Cherney and Ryan Barnett provided quality pitching. In Minor A play: Cubs 3, Braves 2: Graham Clevidence scored twice, once a single by Derek Andrews in the first and again on a passed ball in the third inning, to help give the Cubs the victory on May 8. Chris Molina faced nine batters in his three innings of pitching, striking out four.

Ryan Cherney pitched a complete-game shutout to lead the Padres to a 4-0 win over the Giants in Costa Mesa National Little League Majors division baseball action April 27. The Padres' offense was led by Ryan Burns, Ryan Barnett, Colin Kincaid, Justin Batangan and Kevin Thomas. Cherney received defensive help from Eusebio Castillo, Gian-Paul Stebbins and Jesus Rodriguez. In Minor A action: Cubs 7, Yankees 1: Chris Molina drove in four runs and Eddie Bisoso drove in two to lift the Cubs to victory May 1. Nick Schimer, Graham Clevidence and Derek Andrews contributed to the offensive output for the Cubs.

Obituary for Arthur D. Perrone Sr. Arthur D. Perrone Sr. of Costa Mesa, California died on May 8, 2011, 104 years to the day of his birth in a small town on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Argentina. After the death of his mother, the family moved to Chicago when he was a small child. Married to his wife, Mary Santo Perrone for 67 years, he worked for the same company in Chicago for 45 years until his retirement in 1969. He and his wife moved to Southern California in 1974. Mr Perrone was a life long, loyal Chicago Cub fan who always believed that the next year would be the year the Cubs would win the title. The Chicago team saw their last World Series victory in 1908, a year after Mr. Perrone’s birth.

Trailing, 5-1, after three innings, the Mariners responded with eight runs to down the Red Sox, 9-8, in Newport Beach Little League AAA play. The Mariners rallied for five runs with two outs in the fourth inning on timely hitting from Andrew Machoskie and Chris Alvarez. Devin Gunay and Austin Blodgett provided solid play and pinch-runner Dean Murdoch stole home for a key run. Alvarez and Mitch Gardner combined for 11 strikeouts, seven by Gardner, on the mound.

The Costa Mesa American Little League Mariners defeated the Angels for the Majors division championship, 8-2, June 7. Throughout the season, the Mariners (13-7) were led by Mike Molina, who struck out 11 against the Yankees for a win. Ryan Boulger hit two home runs in one game and Chris Gute added two homers in another game. Molina, David Hovdestad and Roland Wood each added one. Outfielders Nico Sauceda, Hovdestad, Justin Miller, Austin Bagby and Scott Beach provided strong defense.

Benny Seliner, Mike Markovsky and A.J. Roth each pitched two strong innings to lead the Costa Mesa National Little League Major Dodgers to a 3-2 victory over the Padres to open the season March 6 at TeWinkle School. The Dodgers' offense, led by Josh Dominguez, Roth, Johnny Valdez and Robert Fernandez, put pressure on the Padres, moving runners into scoring position often. The Padres got strong pitching performances from Ryan Cherney, Ryan Burns and Eusebio Castillo.

A.J. Roth hit two home runs to lead the Costa Mesa National Little League Major Dodgers to a 13-1 mercy-rule victory over the first-place Padres Saturday. Roth drove in five runs with the homers. Benny Seliner gave an excellent pitching performance and Eric Mickelson drove in two runs with a double for the Dodgers (9-6). Josh Dominguez, Coleman Brown, Tony Campo, Nico Ruan, Johnny Valdez and Josh Hill each had one RBI. Michael Markovsky, McCanne Sanford and Robert Fernandez all contributed to the offensive onslaught.

BASEBALL Costa Mesa National Little League Minor A Cubs 7, Pirates 6: Josh Tierney drove in the winning run in the top of the eighth inning with a double to left center in the Costa Mesa National Minor-A Cubs' 7-6 victory over the Pirates Saturday. Tierney then struck out three in the bottom of the inning to preserve the victory in the game that was postponed because of darkness earlier in the week. After the completed extra-inning game, the teams played again, with the Cubs winning, 11-1.

The Yankees earned a 6-5 victory over the A's in Newport Harbor Baseball Association Mustang Division action. Tyler Kiehnle, Christopher Sheppard and Jake Stowell each delivered hits to break a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning. Kiehnle, Sheppard and Nicolas Seargent held the A's in check with strong pitching performances. The A's were lead by solid pitching from Blake Pender, Conner Sweeney and Sergio Valenzuela. In other Mustang action: Cubs 14, Dodgers 7: The Cubs smacked four triples, including two by Patrick Overstreet, to spark their offense.

to finals Tony Altobelli NEWPORT BEACH - A couple of defensive gems, a couple of patient at-bats and a couple of strange events added up to a big win for the Cubs in their 8-1 win over the Rangers in Newport Harbor Baseball Bronco Division (ages 11-12) playoff game Thursday at Mariners Park. The win sends the Cubs (16-3) into the Bronco Division title game where they will face the winner of the White Sox and Rangers, who play today at 5 p.m., also at Mariners.
