Ken Perry When my wife, Laura, and I decided to take a land tour of Croatia and the Adriatic coast, people asked if we were afraid to go and wondered why we'd want to go to Croatia anyway. Fighting in the countries of the former Yugoslavia is over, although Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo are under the protection of troops from NATO and the United States. Tour companies don't take tourists to dangerous places. We had a wonderful time, and at no time did we sense any fear or antagonism against Americans.

When we pulled into the tiny harbor in the ancient walled town of Korcula, we breathed a sigh of relief. It had been a long day: 70 miles across the Adriatic from the coast of Italy aboard our little 39-foot motor yacht, Avanti. We had finally arrived in Croatia, that string-bean shaped country stretching along the eastern edge of the Adriatic Sea and including more than a thousand mostly uninhabited islands. We landed in Korcula (pronounced KOR-choo-la), located on one of the small islands 50 miles north of the famous walled city of Dubrovnik.

CORONA DEL MAR — The story of how John Mann feared putting on a Speedo never gets old. Mann said he was around 12 when he was introduced to water polo. On Thursday, he returned to Corona del Mar High, the site of his first game. If there was ever another time for Mann to be afraid to throw on a Speedo again, it was this night. In front of an overflowing crowd of around 2,000, Mann and the U.S. men’s senior national team was exposed at the Bergeson Aquatic Center.

It all began when a friend saw a cruise going to Dubrovnik, Croatia. He had been denied a chance to go a number of years ago because of its Communist rule and his security clearance involving military missile development. The cruise's itinerary included Ephesus, which we had a desire to visit. We didn't hesitate in booking the trip. Arriving in Venice, we joined our friends for several days of touring and then boarded our ship. We sailed to the port of Rimi, Italy, with a visit to the nearby Republic of San Marino located on a mountain pinnacle.
