CORONA DEL MAR — With a stingy defense and an early lead, the Corona del Mar High girls’ soccer team found itself in a comfortable and advantageous position to return to the CIF Southern Section Division II quarterfinals. And the Sea Kings inevitably did just that, as the Kaylee O’Connor-led defense did enough for Maddie O’Connor’s early tally to hold up for a 1-0 second-round victory over fourth-seeded Crescenta Valley on Wednesday afternoon at Corona del Mar High.

Joseph Boo ANAHEIM - Surprising Costa Mesa high's boys basketball team was in for a real test as it took its 10-3 record into Tuesday's second round game of the Canyon Classic against mighty Crescenta Valley. The Mustangs withstood a Crescenta Valley barrage for the first three quarters, but a 24-9 fourth quarter ultimately did them in, 73-54. They will now face Buena Park today, at 12 p.m. "We were right there," Costa Mesa coach Bob Serven said. "We just missed our shots."

Around the midway point through the first of three rounds, Glendale High girls' tennis Coach Bob Davidson and Burbank Coach Paul McNiff chatted. The duo discussed how the round appeared to be even and they figured the match would be close. A short time later, Glendale turned the contest into a landslide. Meldia Hacobian won her three singles sets to spur visiting Glendale to a convincing 17-1 nonleague win against host Burbank on Monday. The Nitros (2-0)

AMANDA CHASE AND TRAVIS KUEHN Amanda Joanne Chase will marry Travis Joseph Kuehn in March. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Jim and Diana Chase and Gina and Tom Martin of La Crescenta, and a graduate of Crescenta Valley High School. She will receive her bachelor's degree in nursing from Azusa Pacific University in December. The bridegroom-elect is the son of Jim Kuehn and Joni and Ernie Myatt of Santa Clarita, and is a graduate of Hart High School.

The CIF Southern Section Division 1 girls' water polo championship game featuring Back Bay rivals Corona del Mar High and Newport Harbor is scheduled for Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine. The No. 3-seeded Sea Kings (26-4) and No. 4 Sailors (24-6) have met four times this season, each team winning twice. The title game is a rematch of last year's final that Newport Harbor won. Ticket prices are $8 for general admission and $5 for high school students (with school identification)

BURBANK VS. GLENDALE WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday. WHERE: Moyse Field at Glendale High. RECORDS: The Bulldogs are 2-2; the Nitros are 1-3. LAST WEEK: Burbank defeated Hoover, 48-7; Glendale lost to Temple City, 24-14. OUTLOOK: The Bulldogs received good news even before they took the field Friday in a win against Hoover. Starting quarterback Jason Barbic, who broke the thumb on his throwing hand two games ago, had surgery Thursday to repair the injury.

Six players signed national letters of intent with the UC Irvine baseball program Tuesday. Kris Krise, a 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher from Crescenta Valley High, went 7-3 and struck out 60 as a junior. He also had a 1.84 ERA and earned All-Pacific League honors. Krise was a memer of the 2001 Dodgers and Angels Elite teams as well as the 2001 USA Baseball Team. Third baseman Cody Haerther from Chaminade Prep is a Team One National choice and two-time first-team All-Mission League player.

CROSS-COUNTRY Burroughs in 38th annual Kenny Staub Invitational: The Indian girls' varsity team did well in the meet Saturday at Crescenta Valley Park, as it placed third in Division I. Burroughs was led by Michelle Martinez, who finished seventh in 19 minutes 36 seconds on the three-mile course. She was followed by teammate Sadee Martinez (ninth; 20:10), Lilyana Morejon (14th; 21:07), Brenda Santana (16th; 21:13), Kerry Hodgins (31st; 22:00) and Tryn Campos (38th; 22:48)

Burbank High golfer has success in amateur tournaments: Next week, Con O'Connor will begin his senior year at Burbank High. The golfer will be hoping to build upon a successful summer for his final year with the Bulldogs. O'Connor is fresh off some fine finishes in Southern California Professional Golfers' Assn.-sponsored events. In fact, he won two tournaments last week. He shot a 67 on Aug. 15 in a tournament in La Mirada to tie for the championship in his age group.
