Giada de Laurentiis, the celebrity chef best known as the host of “Everyday Italian” on the Food Network, is scheduled to sign her cookbooks this afternoon at the Crate & Barrel store in South Coast Plaza. Between 1 and 3 p.m., the first 450 customers to purchase a copy of one of de Laurentiis’ three books — “Everyday Italian,” “Everyday Pasta” and “Giada’s Family Dinners” — will receive an autograph. There will also be sample tastings of the chef’s Everyday Italian Gourmet specialty foods line.

COSTA MESA — Cindi Fullerton and Andrea Santini were keen on getting an autograph from their favorite celebrity chef Wednesday at South Coast Plaza, but they didn’t bring just a book for signing. The Huntington Beach businesswomen, who run the labor and delivery gown company B.Y.O.G., brought a stack of maternity outfits to give to Giada de Laurentiis, the host of TV’s “Everyday Italian” and author of three cookbooks. De Laurentiis is expecting her first child, and when she went to the Crate & Barrel store at South Coast Plaza for a book signing, the partners decided to make an exchange.

The Second Harvest Food Bank will hold its 16th annual Food, Wine & Microbrew Fest on Oct. 12 to raise funds for the food bank. Live salsa music and dancing will accompany food and wine, which will be provided by regional restaurants, vineyards and microbreweries. Tickets purchased before the event are $40; at the door they will be $50. Group tickets will be available for $30 per person for groups of 10 or more. The event will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Crate & Barrel wing of South Coast Plaza.

The mystery continues Pegye Bechler's disappearance more than two years ago was one of the great local mysteries in memory. How could a mother of three -- a triathlete and swimmer -- fall out of a boat and disappear under the Pacific without a trace? Her husband Eric said he was riding a bodyboard behind the boat, hit a wave and wiped out. When he resurfaced, his wife was gone. Despite an intense search -- which included a naval submarine -- Bechler's body was never found.

An adidas “Originals” store opening today at South Coast Plaza will celebrate its grand opening from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday with professional skaters on hand to visit with fans. Professional skaters Jake Brown and Rob Gonzales will sign autographs and hang out as the L.A.-based art collective “Heavy Weight,” (a.k.a. “HVW8”) paints a mural made up of 20 skate top decks inspired by the Orange County skate scene. The 2,000-square-foot store is in the Crate & Barrel wing on Level 3. Brown and Gonzales will sign the decks.

A grand opening for the new Champagne French Bakery Cafe at South Coast Plaza will not only feature pastries and finger foods, but also a show of arts from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Students from the Orange County High School of the Arts will perform and display artwork for the opening. When the first Champagne French Bakery Cafe was formed 15 years ago, the high school also began its presence in Orange County. The grand opening will include prizes and a portion of The Miss Meringue Great American Scoop-Off Recipe Contest.

B.W. Cook Martinis were mixed. Szechwan-woked Cheng Pee chicken sizzled. A jazz quartet played "When Sunny Get's Blue." Not just another evening on the Orange Coast, but a store opening for the fabulous Crate & Barrel furniture and home wares collection at the new South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa. "Yes, we are new, different, evolving," offered South Coast Plaza managing partner Henry Segerstrom. In the crowd of some 1,200 opening-night revelers Wednesday evening, Segerstrom was joined by his wife, Renee, looking very smart in a suit of winter white wool, and other family members including son, Anton, and niece, Sandy Segerstrom Daniels, with her husband, John Daniels, for what was one of the most fun store openings on the Orange Coast.

Marie Ekberg SOUTH COAST PLAZA -- Where once there was controversy, now there's construction. Work on the sculpted pedestrian bridge linking South Coast Plaza and the former Crystal Court is on schedule, said Debra Gunn Downing, executive director of marketing at South Coast Plaza. The much-debated removal of trees along Bear Street also has occurred, and the replacement Cuban royal palms are in place. "We have finished tearing apart the buildings and are now continuing to put up the new stone-skin facade on the buildings," said David Wilson, who works in C.J. Segerstrom & Sons' Community and Government Relations Office.

Jennifer Kho SOUTH COAST PLAZA--Macy's West is using Costa Mesa as a testing ground for a new home store design concept. The new Macy's Home store, the first of its kind in the country, opened this week at South Coast Plaza. Company officials said if the prototype does well, it could be used as a model for renovation of Macy's Home stores throughout the nation. The three-level store on Bear Street has been set up like a home without interior walls, a concept that company officials said will help make interior decorating easier for customers.

South Coast Plaza plans to become the first shopping center in the nation to provide electric vehicle charging stations. The shopping destination teamed up with Campbell, Calif.-based Coulomb Technologies to provide so-called ChargePoint stations for its customers. “We’re incredibly excited,” said Beverly Morgan, South Coast Plaza spokeswoman. “We’ve been demonstrating environmental leadership, I think, for quite some time, and it’s so exciting to us to be the first shopping center in the U.S. to offer this Coulomb Technologies network to our customers.

Mission Viejo teen Danielle Henderson calls it her church. Neighboring stores say they hope it'll bring more traffic to their stores. And one shopper called it a disappointment. But one thing's for sure — many people are awaiting the arrival of two H&M clothing stores at South Coast Plaza. South Coast Plaza is known for its high-end boutiques and world class restaurants, but two H&M stores, slated for an April opening, will ensure there's affordable, hip fashion available too. "H&M is good at keeping the concept fresh and exciting, and it's perfect for South Coast Plaza in that way," shopping center spokeswoman Debra Gunn-Downing said.
