CARSON - Every time Corona del Mar High broke a huddle, players said, "Rock and roll. " The words are what the Sea Kings heard the night before they attempted to make history on a football field on Saturday afternoon. Over a team dinner in the Port Streets neighborhood in Newport Beach, those words carried over to the CIF State Division III Bowl Game at the StubHub Center in Carson. The words came from Terry Donahue, UCLA's former football coach who lives on Balboa Island. He gave the Sea Kings the blueprint for success in a big game - focus, execute, impose your will, have fun, and rock and roll.

Brandon Fischer may not be the king of the world, but considering his dancing experience, he was happy to settle last year for king of Corona del Mar High School's male faculty. The math teacher was crowned co-champion of the school's first Dancing with the Teachers contest, in which faculty members paired with students to hoof it onstage. Fischer's group got the assignment of lyrical dance, and someone - he's not quite sure whom - decided on the "Titanic" anthem "My Heart Will Go On" for the music.

"Hi, Mommy!" "Hi, baby, how ever are you?" "Oh, in heaven, everything is fine. There's no pain, sickness, sadness. What about on Earth?" "Well, there's all of that and we miss you terribly. " "I miss you too, Mommy, but please smile for me. I see you every day. I have a pony and I am in charge of watering the old man's garden. " If any of the 20 Sandy Hook Elementary School students who lost their lives last year were able to talk to their mothers, that's how the conversation would sound.

Everything seemed to be going as planned for the Corona del Mar High football team Friday night. The Sea Kings had been on this stage before, as they made their third straight trip to the CIF Southern Section Southern Division finals. For the second consecutive year and against the same opponent, CdM jumped out to a fast start against Garden Grove. Then the penalties began to pile up, seven for 80 yards. The biggest one came with less than 8 minutes left in the first half, as the usually respectful CdM sideline erupted and for the wrong reason.
