In terms of the rankings, the result of Wednesday's Pacific Coast League girls' lacrosse match had to be considered an upset. Beckman came into the match ranked No. 4 in Southern California by laxpower.com, and CdM was No. 10. The Patriots, who own impressive wins over Los Alamitos and Mater Dei, were also the top-ranked team in Orange County. CdM was again at the No. 10 spot. The team that always seems to have the "LAX power" in the league is Beckman. But CdM might just be ready to change that this year.

When most people see TJ Defalco play volleyball they get caught up in the way the Huntington Beach High outside hitter can jump high and hit so hard. They are amazed to find out he's only a junior and begin to think how great he and the Oilers will be next year. Never mind 2015. The scary thought is that unbeaten Huntington Beach is only going to get better this season. Playing with their No. 3 setter, Davis Gillett, who is a backup libero, the Oilers swept Corona del Mar, 25-23, 25-17, 26-24, to capture the OC Championships Division 1 title Monday at Edison High.

Corona del Mar High seniors Josh Kliger and Carson Williams played high-quality doubles Friday afternoon at CdM. That's nothing new for the Sea Kings' team captains and No. 1 doubles team, but they definitely were playing well against David Ball and Vikram Chari of the Menlo School of Atherton. In the end, it wasn't quite enough. Ball and Chari rallied from a break of serve down to win the set 8-7 in a tiebreaker. The set seemed indicative of the match. CdM battled, but Menlo was just too good.

Standing on the sidewalk in Corona del Mar, 25-year-old Ashley Sourapas consulted her map. "We skipped one, but I don't know where it is," she said, looking up again to scan the storefronts across the street. Sourapas was searching for the missing stop on the Corona del Mar Bridal Walk, a Sunday afternoon affair that sent brides-to-be on a tour of the varied wedding offerings local businesses had to offer. Looking at everything from wedding venues to bridal dress boutiques, about 26 brides wandered the short stretch of Pacific Coast Highway during the six-hour event, which ended with a complimentary cocktail reception at Five Crowns.
