IRVINE — The team with nothing to lose refused to do just that Wednesday night. Now UC Irvine, the top-seeded men's soccer team that dropped a 2-1 decision at home to No. 4-seeded Cal State Fullerton in the semifinals of the Big West Conference Tournament, must hope it lost just short of everything. The No. 8-ranked Anteaters (14-3-3), who claimed the Big West regular-season title to wrap up the top seed and a home assignment against the Titans, must now hope to receive an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament, in which they have appeared the last two years.

Though George Kuntz and his wife Susan have two kids, the UC Irvine men's soccer program has also, for the last 15 years, been the veteran coach's baby. Having made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances the last two seasons, Kuntz's Anteaters seem to have blossomed into a formidable force in their formative years. And despite the loss of four of his top six scorers from last season — including All-American Irving Garcia, Big West Conference Tournament MVP Carlos Aguilar, and inspirational captain Kevin Santora — there are those who believe season 16 under Kuntz could be savory sweet.

The UC Irvine men's soccer program did much better playing its opponents than the percentages last season. So it was that despite a 14-3-3 record, its second Big West Conference regular-season title in three seasons, and a No. 8 national ranking, the Anteaters were denied an at-large berth into the 48-team NCAA Tournament. An upset loss to Cal State Fullerton in the conference tournament that UCI had won the previous two seasons, its No. 62 RPI ranking, two losses in its last three games, and a lack of a signature win left what Coach George Kuntz said may have been his best team ever out of the postseason.
