CORONA DEL MAR - Visiting Capistrano Valley had as many grand slams as Corona del Mar had solid hits in the Cougars' 10-0 baseball victory Saturday in a Foothill Division consolation game of the Newport Elks Tournament. CdM junior catcher Nick Karpe, a transfer from Mater Dei, carried the Sea Kings' offense, going 2 for 2 with a double. Freshman Wess Presson was also credited with a hit for the hosts (2-3), who visit Redondo Union Tuesday at 4 p.m. for their final Pacific Coast League tuneup.

COSTA MESA - The Corona del Mar High boys basketball team closed out Estancia tournament play with a 65-59 victory over Mary Star in a consolation game Saturday. Senior Idean Shahangian led the Sea Kings (5-9) with a game-gh 23 points. Kevin Mancillas, Eric Snell and Zach Brewster also scored in double figures as the CdM trio finished with 12 points each. UC Irvine men's basketball coach Pat Douglass said last week Western Michigan backed out of playing against the University of Oklahoma in the Sooner Invitational. There will be no backing out now. The Anteaters, who lost to No. 7 Oklahoma Friday, will face Western Michigan today at 10 a.m. (PST) in a consolation game in the Sooner Invitational. The Broncos lost their opener to Princeton, 62-59. Western Michigan, which was picked to finish second in the Mid-American West Division behind Ball State, was led by forward Mike Williams, who scored 12 points.

MISSION VIEJO - The Newport Harbor boys 18-and-under water polo team, featuring mostly players who will compete in the fall under Sailors Coach Bill Barnett, defeated Laguna Hills, 9-7, in a consolation game Sunday in the Capistrano Valley Tournament at Saddleback College. Newport Harbor also lost to Capo Valley, 10-9, Sunday. Michael Bury scored seven goals in the two contests for Harbor, while Nathan Weiner accounted for two goals in the win over Laguna Hills.

The Newport Harbor High baseball team came within, 3-2, after four innings, but visiting Aliso Niguel scored three runs in the seventh to pull out a 6-2 Sea View League opening win over the Sailors Friday. Junior Karo Makserjian and sophomore Matt Erickson scored one run each in the bottom of the fourth, on a fielder's choice and an error, respectively, for Newport (2-5). The Sailors will face host Ocean View today at 1 p.m. in a consolation game of the Newport Elks Tournament.

Sophomore Maya Van Den Heever added eight points, seven assists and four steals for Estancia (11-2). The Eagles play in the title game at 7:30 p.m. — BOYS' BASKETBALL Corona del Mar 76, Cooper 65 LA JOLLA — Senior guard Robby Bracho made five three-pointers and finished with 21 points in the Sea Kings' consolation game against a school from The Woodlands, Texas, in the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic at La Jolla Country Day School on Friday.

The Costa Mesa High baseball team broke open a scoreless tie with four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the seventh to overcome six errors and claim a 9-4 win at Bolsa Grande Wednesday in a makeup consolation game from the Newport Elks Tournament. Sophomore Jeff Waldron went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and fellow sophomore Alex Pisarski went 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and one RBI to pace the Mustangs' 13-hit attack. Meanwhile, senior starter George Vargas was holding the Matadors in check, yielding just two hits and one unearned runs in five innings, before being relieved.

BASEBALL Estancia 20, Schurr 3 MONTEBELLO — Senior shortstop Ryan Redding went four for four with two runs batted in and a triple for the Eagles in a Costa Mesa bracket consolation game in the Newport Elks Tournament Wednesday. The game was stopped in the fifth inning because of the mercy rule. Estancia sophomore pitcher Marc DeFrenza went four innings, allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out four to earn his first win. Sophomore utility player Ryan Boselo went three for three and scored three times for Estancia (2-2)

Corona del Mar High junior Ben Maggard personified mound efficiency Saturday, throwing just 63 pitches in a complete-game shutout to key a 5-0 victory in a consolation game of the Newport Elks tournament Saturday at CdM. Maggard threw 47 strikes and started 21of 30 hitters off with a strike in a game Sea Kings Coach John Emme said lasted only 80 minutes. Maggard's mastery helped extend the team's shutout streak to 14 innings and Corona del Mar hurlers have allowed just one run in 24 innings, heading into Tuesday's nonleague Battle of the Bay showdown with visiting Newport Harbor.

Sophomore Mike McDaniels had a no hitter for 4 2/3 innings and persevered to collect complete-game victory as the host Estancia High baseball team tallied its first win this season with an 8-2 triumph over Los Amigos in a consolation game of the Newport Elks tournament Saturday. McDaniels fanned nine and allowed just two hits in seven innings while retiring the final seven batters he faced. The Eagles (1-4) scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the game open after Los Amigos (1-4)

The Newport Harbor High baseball team collected 12 hits and relied on a strong pitching performance from Joey Cantarella to shut out Magnolia, 7-0, in a consolation game of the Newport Elks tournament Thursday at the Sailors' field. Cantarella struck out five and allowed four hits and one walk in his six scoreless innings, while Brandon Jasper preserved the shutout with one no-hit inning.
