WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Concordia def. Vanguard IRVINE - The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, remained undefeated with a 25-15, 25-19, 25-13 victory in Golden State Athletic Conference action Tuesday night. Concordia, led by Reanna Schelhaas' 11 kills, improved to 27-0, 11-0 in conference. The Lions, ranked No. 21, dropped to 15-13, 5-6 after losing their fourth straight match. Jessica Neves and Charlotte Heerlyn had five kills each to lead Vanguard. Kelly Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product had a match-high 22 digs for the Lions.

BASEBALL Vanguard 5, Concordia 4 COSTA MESA — Jason Dovel had a walk-off RBI single down the left-field line, lifting the Lions in the bottom of the 14th inning of Thursday's Golden State Athletic Conference game. Jeremiah Mejia, who led off the 14th inning with a single, scored the game-winning run. Joseph Vegas III earned the win after shutting out Concordia in six innings in relief. He struck out five and allowed three hits. Bryson Rahier went three for six with three RBIs for Vanguard (21-25, 15-19 in conference)

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Vanguard 77, Concordia 57 IRVINE - Nicole Ballestero had 27 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday. Alison Drennan had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, Samantha Doucette scored 10 points and Esther Timmermans had nine points and 13 rebounds for Vanguard (13-1, 4-1 in conference), ranked No. 3 in the NAIA. Concordia is 4-13, 2-3.

And then there was one. The Concordia University baseball team, quite possibly the most unlikely of champions, defied the odds and became just that — champions — winning the Avista-NAIA World Series held in Lewiston, Idaho. The Eagles, seeded No. 9 in the 10-team World Series, went 5-1 in the double-elimination tournament, taking home the school's first national crown in baseball, culminating with their 9-3 victory over Lubbock Christian (Texas) in Friday's winner-take-all title game.

IRVINE - Vanguard University split its doubleheader with host Concordia University Saturday afternoon in Golden State Conference action. Game one was a pitcher's duel between the Lions' Gina Liebengood and the Eagles' Carrie Shankles. Liebengood threw 11 innings, scattering five hits and allowing no earned runs, while striking out 13, but still took the loss. In game two, Vanguard (12-9, 3-3 in conference) outhit Concordia, 13-5. Val Vanaken and Stacey Caggiano each three had hits, an RBI and a run scored.

COSTA MESA - The Vanguard University baseball team tightened its grip on the fourth and final playoff spot in the Golden State Athletic Conference with an 8-0 win over visiting Concordia. The Lions (28-19, 15-13 in conference) jumped out to a 6-0 first-inning lead and never looked back. Anthony Walker pitched seven strong innings to improve his record to 9-3. IRVINE - Vanguard University's Chad Chop punctuated an offensive onslaught Tuesday for the Lions with four hits and six RBIs as VU defeated host Concordia, 12-11, in Golden State Athletic Conference baseball. VU, which completed a season sweep of Concordia, won its fifth straight. The Lions collected 20 hits, while improving to 19-21-1, 13-12 in the GSAC. Concordia fell to 20-24, 9-15. Chop finished 4 for 6 with three runs scored and six RBIs, including a three-run home run in the fourth inning.

BASEBALL Doubleheader DAVIS — UC Irvine junior closer Sam Moore earned two saves to break the school single-season record and help the Anteaters sweep Big West Conference host UC Davis on Saturday. Moore, who has an NCAA-best 18 saves, surpassed the previous mark of 17 held by Blair Erickson and Eric Pettis. UCI rallied with four runs in the ninth inning to win the first game, 4-2, then broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth to claim a 4-1 triumph in Game 2. The Anteaters (27-14, 10-1 in conference)

SOFTBALL Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament IRVINE — No. 4-seeded Vanguard University defeated No, 5-seeded Hope International, 7-0, in the first game Friday morning, then fell, 3-2, to top-seeded Concordia in the double-elimination format at Concordia. Breanne Gomez went two for four with a home run and three runs batted in against Hope, against which Shelby Kuryllo homered and had two RBIs. Taylor Wilson, Brittney Boggs, Haley Croce and Summer Penner all had two hits for the Lions, for whom Rachel Stalford pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout to improve to 17-5.

BASEBALL Vanguard 7, Bethesda 2 Senior catcher John Collins went four for four with two runs batted in and senior shortstop Nick Rodda was three for four with one RBI to lead the host Lions in the nonconference game Tuesday. Ian Sakry was two for four with one RBI for the winners (29-18), for whom Jordan Moak earned his first win of the season by allowing no earned runs in five innings. Vanguard plays host to Concordia in a three-game Golden State Athletic Conference series beginning Friday.

BASEBALL UCLA 5, UC Irvine 0 LOS ANGELES — Kris Paulino went one for three with a walk during a nonconference game on Tuesday, but the No. 25th-ranked Anteaters' 10-game winning streak ended. Connor Spencer, Taylor Sparks and Jerry McClanahan each had a hit for UCI (12-4), which was shut out for the second time this season. MEN'S BASKETBALL Vanguard 75, Concordia 74 (OT) The visiting Lions rallied to tie in regulation then pulled away and held on in overtime to claim at least a share of their first Golden State Athletic Conference title in 24 seasons Tuesday. The No. 9-ranked Lions (22-4, 9-2 in conference) need just one win in their three remaining conference games to claim the program's first outright conference crown since 1989. They shared GSAC titles in 1990 and 1987. Senior guard Preston Wynne had a game-high 28 points, including a three-pointer with 1:28 left in overtime that broke a 70-70 tie. Concordia's Josh Smith made two free throws to pare the margin to one, but Vanguard junior DeAngelo Jones made two free throws with 1:39 left to put the visitors up 75-72.

Even if the result wasn't that big of a surprise, the cushion by which host Vanguard University defeated Golden State Athletic Conference men's basketball powerhouse Concordia was enough to leave the Lions and their fans giddy. Vanguard, which defeated the Eagles last season at home for the first time in five seasons, dropped a 94-79 thumping on the program that had won six of the last eight GSAC regular-season titles. The Eagles (16-5, 3-2 in conference) also came in ranked No. 8 in the NAIA, four spots ahead of the Lions.

The UC Irvine men's volleyball season is officially open for business. But the message sent most clearly during the Anteaters' 25-21, 25-13, 25-15, road drubbing of defending NAIA champion Concordia on Friday had to do with closing time. The Anteaters, who have won the last two NCAA titles, played their original seven starters throughout, effectively stepping on the throat of the overmatched Eagles. Vanguard University freshmen Juan Arellano and Najum Paz are among four players with local ties named All-Golden State Athletic Conference in men's soccer. Arellano, a midfielder, had five goals and seven assists for a team-best 17 points (two points for a goal and one for an assist) to help the Lions finish 8-1-1, 4-5-1 in conference for fifth place. One of his goals was a game-winner Paz, an Estancia High product, had five goals and two assists, with three game-winning goals for the Lions.

Vanguard University senior forward Jordan Davidson has been named Golden State Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year to highlight four Lions named to the all-conference team in women's soccer. Davidson, the GSAC Player of the Year and a first-team NAIA All-American as a junior after transferring from a community college in Arizona, has 11 goals and seven assists for the No. 11-ranked Lions, who take a 15-3 record into Thursday's GSAC Tournament semifinal at Westmont. Senior Kayla Arenas, who leads the Lions with 14 goals and six assists, made the team as a forward, while junior midfielder Jen Martin and sophomore defender Ashley McCutcheon are the other Vanguard honorees.
