The Corona del Mar Junior Water Polo Program’s 12-and-under boys’ team went undefeated en route to winning the Pacific Fall Classic Tournament Sunday in San Diego. The squad wasn’t the only team that earned success at the tournament. The CdM 10-and-under co-ed team tied for first place and the boys’ 14-and-under squad went 4-1. Costa Mesa Pop Warner Junior Midget Division Eagles Silver 44, Montebello 20 The Eagles improved to 2-1 in their division.

AYSO Region 97 Girls under 12 (APP) Newport Breakers 4, North Irvine 0: The Breakers needed a win and at least three goals to win the league championship, and accomplished both goals for the Advanced Play Program title. With two key players missing (August Sullivan and Delaney McCardle), two injured and hobbled players (Kirsten Rohan and Katherine Maddox) and a sick player (Paige Tennison), the Breakers needed a total team effort. That's what happened, as Madison Mastera scored three goals and Hannah Nance scored a fourth.

Bryce Alderton Marce Almaraz returned to his original problem -- three lost fields for next fall's AYSO Region 57 soccer season. The region's commissioner, Almaraz, entering his third year at the helm, glanced over the schedule of field usage for the fall season, a guide to which teams from various fall sports in Newport Beach can use certain fields at designated times. "We'll have three teams on one field," Almaraz said last week, following a city of Newport Beach Recreation and Senior Services Department youth sports commission meeting, where field usage was discussed.

Camden Nicholson scored two goals, including the game-winner, for the Corona del Mar boys under-14 soccer team's 3-2 victory against the Costa Mesa Patriots in AYSO Region 57 action. Nicholson scored the game-winner on a penalty kick in the fourth quarter. Danny Baker scored the second goal and played midfield while Paul Bioche, Dillon Norton and Max Newfield kept the pressure on the Patriots' defense. Scotty Berkhausen, Jon Kiani, Eric Wright and James Petrilli covered the field well.

Coming into the Corona del Mar High girls' soccer program as a freshman, Ally Brahs definitely was going to get on the field. All Coach Bryan Middleton had to do was look at her size and her ability to know he had a special player. Some of the best players are ones who have more of a fluid role, ones who can play all over the pitch. That was definitely true for Brahs. "She was physically gifted enough, even as a freshman, that I played her at defensive midfield and forward throughout the whole season," Middleton said.

The Ensign seventh-grade girls’ basketball team ended its season with a bang, defeating unbeaten Dwyer, 24-23, in the Coastal Athletic League tournament championship game Thursday. Trailing most of the game and down 12 points to start the fourth quarter, Ensign staged a remarkable comeback. Kaitlynn Bell started the scoring with two quick baskets. Mackenzie Gaddis added two other baskets to cut the lead, and Sammie Yeager later helped seal the victory with her clutch free throws.

FOOTBALL Newport Mesa Jr. All-American Junior division Baldwin Hills Bruins 32, Newport Mesa Silver Seahawks 14: Quest Truxton completed passes to wide receivers Matt McKinnon, Adam Freeman, Sage Fleming and Cole Collins in the second quarter. Fullback Brody Richter and ran behind the line of William Somekh, Teddy Somekh, Kobe Benter, and Brandon Hauser for a 40 yard score. Defensively, linemen Brian Leguay Chad Sheldon, Trevor Branca and Dominic Komadina and linebackers and defensive backs: Colton Benter, Alex Fuller, Will Eury, Jacob Fisher, Isaiah Davis and Cole Collins sewed up the defensive line.

SOCCER Region 120 Boys under 16 Costa Mesa 4, South Irvine 0: Juan Becerra scored two goals. Defenders Matt Kirchberg, Luu Nguyen and Jacob Hurd were hard to stop and hard to score on. AYSO Region 57 Girls under 16 Corona del Mar 2, Costa Mesa Code Blue 0: Corona del Mar remained undefeated, beating host Blue Code in a competitive match. Bayley Sprowls scored in the midst of traffic. In the second half, the defensive play by Taylor Rhodes, Chelsea Giger, Ariana Condon and Alix Condon led the way. Julie Kramer scored the final goal of the game with an assist from Breezy Brewster.
