The Costa Mesa Aquatics Club 12U boys' water polo team were honored for winning a gold medal at the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics by the Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board Tuesday. The team included Costa Mesa Middle School students, eighth-graders Augie Cunningham, Jacob Garcia and Blake Hudson, and seventh-graders Caedmon Fisher, Jose Albarion, Kevin Johnson and Teak Zachary, and coaches Dustin and Cody Serrano.

The Costa Mesa Aquatics Club 14-and-under boys swept the silver bracket of the Southern Pacific Area Championships this past weekend at Corona High. With wins over Vanguard, 6-4, SoCal, 17-5, and Anteater, 10-8, CMAC went in to the gold-medal match to face a familar foe in SoCal. CMAC defeated SoCal, 14-5, to win the championship. The team consists of Kevin Johnson, Teak Zachary, Kevin Volk, Nicholas Classen, Augie Cunningham, Blake Hudson, Jacob Garcia, Carter Finley, Finn Ryder, Kyle Cannon, Caedmon Fisher, Eizyk Leyva, Tony Shin, Cade Pendergraft and Tristan Trepas.

This past weekend over 100 teams from across California traveled to Orange County to participate in one of the biggest winter club water polo tournaments. The 17th annual Winterfest touranment was played at pools across Orange County. The Costa Mesa Aquatics Club entered five teams a 10U co-ed, 12U boys, 14U girls , 14U boys and 16U boys. For the first time, CMAC also hosted two pools for the tournaments, the aquatics center at Costa Mesa High School and pool at Estancia High School, showing that CMAC is truly a city club.

The Costa Mesa Aquatics club added another big tournament win to its trophy case. The 10U team took the championship last weekend at the Laguna Beach tournament. The club went undefeated, winning five games against some major powerhouse teams. Never falling behind in any of the games, CMAC easily sailed through the tournament, beating Capistrano Valley, 11-8, Huntington Beach, 14-1, Pacific Polo, 13-2, Corona del Mar, 5-1, and 15-5 against RIverside for the championship. Coaches Cody and Dustin Serrano said they are so proud of how hard the team played and they are quickly becoming one of the top 10U teams in the area.

The Costa Mesa Aquatics Club youth water polo team went three for three to win the Northwood tournament. CMAC continues to make a name for itself in the youth club scene with victories over SOCAL, United and San Clemente Saturday. In the Northwood summer series the young club faced tough opponents in each of its games and played to win, and win it did. In the first game of the tournament CMAC faced SOCAL, one of the top clubs in Orange County. The CMAC team had a special-guest coach in two-time Olympian Jeff Campbell, who was on the U.S. Olympic Water polo team in Seoul, Korea in 1988 when it won the silver medal and again in Barcelona, Spain in 1992 when Team USA finished fourth.

The Costa Mesa Aquatics Club are aiming for gold at the 2013 Junior Olympics in July. This will be the first year that the new water polo club has participated in the highest tournament in the water polo club scene. CMAC will be sending three of its teams to compete against the best teams in the country. The 12-and-under girls are competing in the championship bracket, while both the 10U mixed and 12U boys will compete in the classic division. The 12U girls and boys are coached by twin brothers Cody and Dustin Serrano, both former Costa Mesa High players.

The Navy SEALs Challenge is meant for high school athletes, but the Costa Mesa Aquatics Club's 10U and 12U teams accepted the challenge. The kids ages 8-12 met the challenge and posted some quality times on Thursday. The polo players were told that their regular practice was going to be turned into the challenge and the kids showed up enthused and determined to finish and finish well. The kids ran one mile, did as many sit-ups, push-ups and pull-ups in a two-minute span and then swam 500 yards.

SANTA ANA - It took nine players, seven games and 112 goals for Costa Mesa Aquatics Club to prove itself on a national stage. Oh yeah, and one gold-medal effort. The program is making its first appearance at the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics. On Tuesday afternoon at Mater Dei High, the Costa Mesa 12-and-under "Black" team showed it had the heart of a champion. CMAC won the classic division at the world's largest water polo tournament, defeating top-seeded Alliance Aquatics of Capistrano Valley, 9-7, in the championship match.

The Serrano brothers, who are twins, have coached at CMAC since the club's inception three years ago. Most recently, they coached the club's 12-and-under boys' team to a gold medal at the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics. Costa Mesa Aquatics Club defeated top-seeded Alliance of Capistrano Valley, 9-7, to win the classic division gold medal on July 30 at Mater Dei High.

Costa Mesa Aquatics Club (CMAC) hosted a one-day clinic that gave local youth a chance to train with Olympian Genai Kerr and Masters Polo player Jesse Hatch. Genai Kerr was the 2004 USA Olympic goalie and a community advocate. He also sits on the Board of Directors for CMAC. The young polo players got to experience drills and plays with Kerr and learned advanced blocking, plays and goalie maneuvers. As well as teaching plays, Kerr also spoke to the kids about focusing on getting good grades and achieving goals when being dedicated and working hard.

Summertime has come and gone in Southern California and the Costa Mesa Aquatics Club ended it with a splash. The 12U boys and 14U boys put together teams to compete in the sixth annual Beach Water Polo Cup. Beach polo has a few different rules - only four field players and a goalie - "crazy ball" would be a better way to describe it. Going on a continuous 30-minute clock, the teams play as many matches to five goals in the time frame....

The Costa Mesa Aquatics Club's boys' 12-and-under team earned third place in the platinum division at the Winterfest water polo tournament earlier this month. The team, coached by Kimmie Morrison, Mitchell Grandia, Jose De La Jara and Cody and Dustin Serrano , was one of the CMAC's squads that had a great showing at the prestigious tournament. CMAC's 10U team took third place in its division, the club's 12U team was fourth and the 16U boys finished 10th. The Costa Mesa Aquatics Center at Costa Mesa High was a site for the annual tournament, which features teams from all over the nation.
