One boys' soccer team that has never beat Estancia High in the past five seasons at Jim Scott Stadium is Godinez. Time began to run out on the Grizzlies' chances in an Orange Coast League showdown on Wednesday. They appeared to earn one last chance to knock off host Estancia. The Grizzlies hurried to get a corner kick off before the match ended. They never struck the ball again. The referee blew his whistle and the only two unbeaten teams in league remained unbeaten. The Eagles and Grizzlies finished in a 2-2 tie on a cold night.

Kaden Ebbinga hasn't lost much during his senior year, just three times in 29 matches. The first two setbacks came during a two-day tournament in December, a time he says he felt drained. The week going into Corona del Mar High's holiday break, Ebbinga wrestled four days in a row. During the stretch, he competed in eight matches. The first three went well for Ebbinga, as he earned wins against wrestlers from Irvine, Newport Harbor and Estancia in dual meets over a two-day span. The next two days, Ebbinga entered the Mann Classic.

To say that Luca Cupido provided memorable moments this year for the Newport Harbor High boys' water polo team would be a bit of an understatement. Cupido, a senior transfer from Italy, always seemed to be turning heads on the Sailors' pool deck. Two plays specifically come to mind. There was the penalty shot lob of Mater Dei's 6-foot-8 senior goalkeeper McQuin Baron in the final of the South Coast Tournament. And there was the backhand shot from mid-tank that went in at the buzzer, accentuating the Sailors' 13-7 win over Huntington Beach in a battle for first place in the Sunset League.

CARSON - Every time Corona del Mar High broke a huddle, players said, "Rock and roll. " The words are what the Sea Kings heard the night before they attempted to make history on a football field on Saturday afternoon. Over a team dinner in the Port Streets neighborhood in Newport Beach, those words carried over to the CIF State Division III Bowl Game at the StubHub Center in Carson. The words came from Terry Donahue, UCLA's former football coach who lives on Balboa Island. He gave the Sea Kings the blueprint for success in a big game - focus, execute, impose your will, have fun, and rock and roll.
