S.J. Cahn Chris Cox sees his job in two parts. As Newport Beach's Congressional representative since 1988, he takes Orange County views to Washington D.C. and reports back to Orange County what he is doing "and what the government is doing to us and for us." That constant give-and-take, he says, is what keeps him in contact with his constituents. So does having to get reelected every two years. "The job itself melds with getting around the community and doing what's necessary to let people know what I'm doing," he said.

So, it's turned out that for many of the most dedicated political insiders, the race to fill the U.S. House seat vacated by Chris Cox when he went to the Securities and Exchange Commission just isn't interesting enough. There are people in the community who have seen the endorsements coming to state Sen. John Campbell (and the money he's raised) and who have figured that Campbell -- who so far is two-for-two in county political races -- has the race sewn up. So instead of debating the 17 candidates' strengths and weaknesses, they are thinking more about who will replace Campbell once he wins a race that's still a week from being over -- and then only on the off chance that in the special primary a single candidate gets more than 50% of the whole vote.

An issue, or better said, a rumor I keep hearing is that Rep. Chris Cox is destined for bigger and better things. And soon. It's a topic that comes up unsolicited when talking local politics lately. And at first blush, it makes sense. When Cox was being talked about for a judgeship two years ago, Democrats in the Senate helped play a role in keeping him in the House. Now, the Republicans are in control of Senate, as well as the House (albeit just barely)

Alex Coolman His name has a way of cropping up in connection with all manner of high-level political assignments: once it was speaker of the House, then it was vice president, and recently it was a hypothetical slot in a George W. Bush Cabinet. Chris Cox (R-Newport Beach), the 47th District congressional incumbent, has never ended up grabbing any of these jobs that people say he might want. But every time he talks about the work he already does as a congressman, one thing seems clear: he likes things pretty well right where he is. "Serving in the leadership of the House with a president of your own party, with the exception of just a few Cabinet positions, is the superior choice," Cox said this week.

Here's the breaking news for you: The election to replace Rep. Chris Cox is Nov. 8. Hold on, you didn't know Cox already was out of Congress? You're thinking he still needs to be confirmed by the Senate to his President Bush-appointed post as head of the Securities and Exchange Commission? All that's old news, at least according to the nonpartisan Women in Leadership group, which has endorsed former Assemblywoman Marilyn Brewer in the race for Cox's seat.

In their last official walk together, the Costa Mayberry Walking Club made it a ceremonial event on New Year's Eve. They began their brisk, 5.38-mile walk in the afternoon from one of the Costa Mesa's oldest and coziest structures, the Diego Sepulveda Adobe in Estancia Park, to one of the city's newest and most gleaming, the 21-story Plaza Tower across from South Coast Plaza. The group, led by Mayor Pro Tem Steve Mensinger, has been walking regularly for about a year, generally meeting before the sun rises - around 5:30 a.m. They got the name Costa Mayberry from the fictional 1960s town of Mayberry depicted in "The Andy Griffith Show.

NEWPORT BEACH — Republican presidential hopeful John McCain raised about $800,000 at a luncheon Tuesday afternoon at the Island Hotel, Assemblyman Van Tran said. The Arizona senator, who is expected to be the Republican candidate this fall, spoke to a group of high-ranking Orange County Republicans at the hotel across the street from Fashion Island. The event was closed to the media. “I have seen supporters from Mitt Romney, [Mike] Huckabee, [Fred] Thompson, all in attendance, maxing out for the senator,” said Tran, one of the area’s biggest McCain boosters.
