Gov. Jerry Brown recently reappointed Costa Mesa resident Douglas La Belle to the board that governs the Orange County Fairgrounds. La Belle, 70, was first appointed to the nine-member Fair Board in 2010. He will serve another four years in the unpaid position. La Belle is the former city manager of Chino Hills, where he worked from 1995 to 2009. He has also worked for Signal Hill, Huntington Beach, Cerritos and Garden Grove in a long public-sector career that began in the 1960s.

BOYS' BASKETBALL Sierra Vista of Nev. 71, Newport Harbor 55 PALM SPRINGS — Nic Sargeant scored 16 points to lead the Sailors in the fifth-place game of the Max Preps Holiday Classic Monday. Garrett Davis had 11 points and Colin Pipkin finished with seven points for Newport Harbor. — Newport Harbor 53, Palm Springs 50 PALM SPRINGS — Nic Sargeant scored 15 points for the Sailors in the fifth-place semifinal of the Palm Springs tournament Saturday. Garrett Davis added 14 points and Caleb O'Neal finished with 12 rebounds for Newport Harbor.

A new Bruxie eatery will open Nov. 19 in Costa Mesa, according to a news release. The restaurant, known for its sandwiches made with waffles instead of bread, will occupy a location on 17th Street at Santa Ana Avenue. The first Bruxie opened in 2010 in Old Towne Orange. Other Southern California locations include Huntington Beach, Irvine and Chino Hills. Nothing on the menu exceeds $10; salads, shakes and sundaes are offered in addition to the sandwiches. Bruxie's Rancho Santa Margarita location closed Monday because of construction deficiencies and ongoing maintenance issues that forced litigation with the landlord, said Bruxie managing partner Dean Simon.

Costa Mesa will soon be home to the seventh location of Bruxie's Gourmet Waffle Sandwiches, according to a release. Diners can get their fix of buttermilk fried chicken, prosciutto and gruyere, and hot pastrami, all served on a waffle - hold the syrup, please, - at 279 E. 17th St. The chain, which started in Old Towne Orange in 2010, will take over sometime this fall the space where Greek Town Grill was located. Other locations are in Irvine, Huntington Beach, Brea, Rancho Santa Margarita and Chino Hills.

CHINO HILLS - The Orange Coast College men's golf team won its third straight Orange Empire Conference title on Monday at Los Serranos Golf Course. The Pirates, who played 18 holes on both of Los Serranos' courses, finished first on the North Course with a score of 360 and third on the South Course with a 378. OCC went 62-8 on the season, followed by Cypress (52-18) and Santiago (46-24), which finished second and third, respectively. The Pirates were led by Jaime Moreno and Kyle Frame on the North Course.

NEWPORT BEACH - Blake Pender has pitched well all season for the Newport Harbor High baseball team. On Tuesday, the sophomore earned his first victory of the season. Pender threw the team's first complete-game shutout of the season, lifting the host Sailors to a 3-0 victory against Chino Hills in a pool-play game of the Beach Pit Classic. Chino Hills, Newport Harbor and Northwood each finished 2-1 in pool play, but Chino Hills wound up winning the pool because it allowed fewer runs.

Lightning wins title The Newport Lightning Basketball Club’s girls’ varsity team went 4-0 last weekend to capture the Swoosh Spring Classic at Godinez High. The Lightning beat the Blue Storm of Fullerton, 65-25, and SoCal Dream (LA/OC), 47-43, in pool play to advance to the championship bracket Sunday. On Sunday, the Lightning beat Pressure of Chino Hills, 44-38 and advanced to the championship game where they beat North Orange County (Buena Park) 32-30 to capture their first championship in their first tournament together as a team.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Last year the Newport Harbor High girls’ golf team came oh so close to completing an undefeated regular season, losing one match. But the Sailors came through Thursday and finished 19-0, 10-0 in the Sunset League after beating Edison, 199-238, at Mile Square Golf Course. Newport Harbor’s score was one shot from tying the Sailors’ lowest of the season. Senior Lauren Draganza shot even-par 36 to earn medalist honors. Senior Lindsey Hanna (38)
