The Laguna Beach water polo boys' 14-and-under team opened its new season Sunday with a 13-3 victory over visiting Chino Hills. Laguna led from the start as Robert Chew scored three goals, Spencer Dodson scored twice and Nolan McConnell had a goal in the first period of play. Goalie Peter Weidner, a newcomer to the team, got off to a strong shot with a block of a four-meter attempt in the opening quarter. Dodson, Chew, Cole Kennedy and Nicky Brunner scored in the second frame, and the defense of Robbie Quellmalz, Zach Riegler, Derek Kott, Tommy Renner and new players Brent Donenfeld, Trevor Bass and Casey Connors held Chino Hills to a single first-half goal.

CHINO HILLS - The Orange Coast United Rush girls under 12 soccer team won the "Before Christmas Classic" tournament at Ayala High. In the opener, the Rush took care of Yucaipa, 1-0, on a goal by Robin Ibbetson, followed by a 1-0 triumph over Chino Hills on a goal by Brittany Koster off a Cindy Mendoza assist. The Rush tied the Murietta Hawks, 1-1, with a goal from Sasha Key before defeating the Nightmare Gold team, 2-1. Ibbetson and Courtney Anderson each scored in the championship game, while the defense was led by Tori Rocke, Elyse VanLeer, Amanda Shaw, Jennifer Powell, Brianna Baker, Chelsea Wisdom and Niki Castillo.

NEWPORT BEACH - Blake Pender has pitched well all season for the Newport Harbor High baseball team. On Tuesday, the sophomore earned his first victory of the season. Pender threw the team's first complete-game shutout of the season, lifting the host Sailors to a 3-0 victory against Chino Hills in a pool-play game of the Beach Pit Classic. Chino Hills, Newport Harbor and Northwood each finished 2-1 in pool play, but Chino Hills wound up winning the pool because it allowed fewer runs.

CHINO HILLS -- Senior Tracy Bjelland scored 22 points and junior Nikki Brannon added 11 points and 11 rebounds to help the Costa Mesa High girls' basketball team prevail over Pomona Catholic, 65-28, in the second round of pool play Thursday at the Chino Hills Tournament. Bjelland added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals for the winners (2-0), who received seven points, seven rebounds and five assists from Bethany Vergara. Mesa meets Chino Hills in the pool-play finale tonight at 7:30 for the right to advance to Saturday's championship game.

CHINO HILLS -- Senior Tracy Bjelland scored a game-high 19 points and led the Costa Mesa High girls' basketball team to a 42-27 season-opening victory over La Habra in the first round of the Chino Hills Tournament on Wednesday. Costa Mesa (1-0) used a 15-4 burst in the second quarter to take an 11-point lead at halftime.Bjelland added four steals while senior Bethany Vergara chipped in nine points in the victory. The Mustangs (1-0) will face Pomona Catholic at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in their second game of pool play at the tournament.

CHINO HILLS - Newport Harbor High's boys golf team continues its winning ways, improving to 8-0 with an overall 386-425 nonleague victory over El Dorado at Western Hills Country Club Thursday. Daniel Kush led the way with a two-under 33 for the nine holes, giving him a 70 when combined with the first-half of the match played at Santa Ana CC March 1. CHINO HILLS ? Estancia High senior Marcus Sostak shot nine-under-par 63, one shot off the course record, to lead a dominant first day for the Eagles at the Golden West League individual tournament at Los Serranos Golf Course on Monday. Sostak, whose previous low round was 67, was seven-under on the back nine, including an eagle on the par-five No. 16. Estancia's Greg Les (76), Ryan Knapp (76), Pat Flannery (79), Austin Serr (80) and Garrett McMasters (80) round out the top six overall.

CHINO HILLS ? Estancia High senior Markus Sostak shot three-under-par 69, the second-lowest round of the day, to help the Eagles finish seventh among 19 boys' golf teams at the CIF Southern Team Divisional on Monday at Los Serranos Golf Course. Estancia, which also included Ryan Knapp (81), John Rausch (81), Greg Les (82) and Austin Serr (83), shot 396 as a team on the North Course, 29 strokes off the pace of victorious Edison. Huntington Beach (370) finished second and will join Edison in the team finals, scheduled Thursday at Hunter Ranch Golf Course in Paso Robles.
