Chase Watson went into the Battle of the Bay game on Oct. 23 fired up, just like his teammates on the Corona del Mar High boys' water polo team. The 6-foot-7 senior center gave a performance to remember, scoring six goals in the Sea Kings' 13-10 victory over Back Bay rival Newport Harbor. After the season was over, Watson looked back on the big victory that sparked CdM's season. He said he remembered someone else on that special day. CORONA DEL MAR - For the first time in recent memory, the Corona del Mar High boys' water polo team held a 50-50 raffle at Tuesday's key nonleague game against Long Beach Wilson. CdM team parent Jeff Ong won the $225 prize. Ong's pockets might have been fatter, but he was still as nervous as anyone else throughout the game. At the start, CdM's chances of winning its home opener looked considerably less than 50-50. But the Sea Kings battled back to claim a wild 10-7 overtime victory over the Bruins in a matchup of the top two teams in the CIF Southern Section Division II coaches' poll.

IRVINE — On a rainy Saturday morning, the Corona del Mar High boys' water polo team spent time in the CdM gym. The Sea Kings listened to a message from Spencer Pirdy and Bryan Riblett, two members of the program when CdM last won a CIF title in 2001. Coach Barry O'Dea also had his players walk around to all four corners of the gym, with senior center Chase Watson reading off all the CIF title banners. Finally, the Sea Kings reached the place where their banner would be placed.

IRVINE — Will Havercroft looked at Evan Ramsey before the fourth quarter began at the Woollett Aquatics Center. As the two leaned on the pool lane line, it was time to say something, senior to senior. "This is not going to be our last quarter of high school water polo," Havercroft said. "Let's go!" Ramsey, who said later that he was "so pumped up," went down and won the sprint, his fourth of the night. Now the season is just as short as that dash to the middle of the pool.
