WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Chaffey 66, Orange Coast 45 IRVINE — Sophomore Ashley Engeln had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Pirates in the championship semfinals of the Irvine Valley Tournament on Friday at IVC. The Pirates (5-5) shot 28.6% from the field for the game and were four of 22 from three-point range to fall into Saturday's third-place game at noon. Only two Pirates besides Engeln had more than one field goal for OCC, which was outrebounded, 50-32, and committed 19 turnovers, six more than the winners (9-2)

RANCHO CUCAMONGA -- Freshman Vanessa Rocha scored one goal and contributed one assist to help lead the Orange Coast College women's soccer team to a 2-0 nonconference victory over host Chaffey Tuesday. Sophomore Fernanda Velasco, a midfielder, gave the Pirates (2-0) a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute. Rocha, also a midfielder, assisted with a short pass near Chaffey's goal. Velasco's shot was the Pirates' third of the game and they finished with 20, while Chaffey came up with five.

IRVINE — The Orange Coast women's basketball team is seeking another tournament championship. The Pirates (8-2), who won the Cuesta Tournament Saturday, advanced to the semifinals of the Irvine Valley Tournament Thursday when they beat Grossmont, 70-53. Alyssa Hanson led OCC with 14 points. Samantha Hansen had 13 points and nine rebounds, Sami Little added 12 points and Amanda Deal scored 10 points for the Pirates, who is ranked No. 10 in Southern California and No. 17 in the state.

" Some days are easier than others, of course, and Friday night's 75-42 romp over Cuesta in the quarterfinals of the Erin Tomlinson Coast Christmas Classic at OCC, was one of the lightest days of the season for the Pirates (11-2). WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Orange Coast 67, Chaffey 47 SAN LUIS OBISPO — Sophomore guard Courtney Ford scored 21 points to pace the Pirates in the title game of the Conoco Phillips Tournament on Saturday at Cuesta College. Ford was named tournament MVP for the second straight year, and was joined on the all-tournament team by OCC sophomore forward Erin Barney. OCC is now 9-1. UC Santa Barbara SANTA BARBARA - All-American outside hitter Kevin Tillie had 18 kills while hitting .485 (18-3-33) and collecting eight digs to lead the Anteaters to their fourth straight win Wednesday. No. 2-ranked UCI beat the No. 12 Gauchos, 25-23, 27-25, 28-26, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match. Opposite Zack la Cavera added 13 kills and seven digs, while outside hitter Connor Hughes recorded 10 kills for the Anteaters (8-3, 5-3 in the MPSF)

BREN EVENTS CENTER -- The Creighton women's basketball team started the game with a 13-0 lead and never looked back as the Bluejays ran past host UC Irvine, 80-57, in a nonconference game Friday night. The loss snaps a four-game Anteater winning streak as UCI falls to 5-2. Creighton improves to 6-2. Creighton played 13 players and 10 scored. Dayna Finch led the balanced attack with 13 points. Guard Lisa Faulkner paced UCI with 11 points, including going 6-for-6 from the foul line.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY State championships FRESNO - Orange Coast College claimed the team title, led by freshman Karen Silvas, who finished eighth. Silvas completed the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 37.77 seconds to help the Pirates produce 79 points, 21 better than runner-up Glendale. Freshman Leanne Allen (16th in 18:58.93), sophomore Chelsea Clifford (18:59.64), sophomore Camille Garcia (21st in 19:07.08), freshman Nirseen Rizk (23rd in 19:08.72), freshman Raeanna Cortez (31st in 19:20.40)

Despite missing two starters, Pirates find way to hold off Chaffey, 47-41, to advance to semifinals of Coast Christmas Classic tonight against El Camino.COSTA MESA -- Depleted, dinged up and yet still determined, the Orange Coast College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 11 Friday night. The Pirates (12-1), playing without two starters due to injuries, handled visiting Chaffey, 47-41, in the quarterfinals of the Coast Christmas Classic. The win moved Coach Mike Thornton's Bucs into a semifinal meeting with El Camino tonight at 7:30.

Dominique Worthy hit a game-winning jumper with 12 seconds left to lift Chaffey into the championship semifinals against Cuesta College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Pirates (8-4) resume tournament play on Thursday against Palomar in a consolation semifinal at 3:30 p.m. Raechelle Davis finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks for OCC, and Jasmine Matar had 13 points and nine rebounds.

WOMEN’S GOLF Fresno State Lexus Classic FRESNO — UC Irvine, ranked No. 21, won its third tournament of the year, capturing the title at the Copper River Country Club Tuesday. The Anteaters trailed San Francisco by one shot entering the final round and fired a 300 Tuesday to claim the title with a score of 891, one shot better than the the Dons (892). Long Beach State recorded the best round of the day with a score of 295 to finish in third (896) followed by UC Davis (899)
