For some athletes in the Newport-Mesa area, this track and field season has possibly been, well, less than a challenge. Among the best in their events, they've dominated league meets and found their tests in the usual string of weekend invitational meets. Well, for them, the challenges start this week with the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet on Friday. The 4:30 p.m. meet at Cerritos College is the lone steppingstone between the division finals and the state championships. Only the top nine performances from around the Southern Section qualified for the Masters Meet (with the exception of the 3,200 meters, which had 12)

COSTA MESA — Karlèh Wilson did her best to stay calm throughout Saturday morning at Jim Scott Stadium. As the Corona del Mar High junior prepared to compete in the shot put at the CIF Southern Section Division III track and field preliminaries, she listened to reggae to soothe her spirits. As the meet approached she stayed calm. She competed in the girls' 4x100 relay then went to warm up for the shot put. The reggae beats continued to flow, but when she went up for her first throw, there was nothing calm or peaceful about it. Wilson's personal record of 41 feet, 3 inches earned her the top qualifying spot to the CIF Southern Section finals Saturday at Cerritos College.

NORWALK — Jaycee Olsen and Jake Taylor qualified for the CIF State track and field finals on their third throws Friday. One of the local high school throwers still might not make the trip to Clovis next week. Olsen's fourth-place finish in the discus event at the CIF Southern Section Masters meet at Cerritos College might signal the end of her high school athletic career. The Corona del Mar senior said she might skip the state meet after she heaved the disc 139 feet. "The thing is, [next]

For a photo gallery, click here. NORWALK — No spinning easily to the top of the ring in this one. Discus thrower Cecil Whiteside stood in a tough spot in trying to defend his CIF Southern Section Division II title. Two of the state’s best athletes in the event competed in Whiteside’s division Saturday. Win the discus and Whiteside likely finished with the best mark out of all the throwers in every division. Unable to heave the disc the furthest to claim his second straight Division II championship, Whiteside accomplished the second best thing at the section boys’ track and field championships.

NORWALK — One Newport Harbor High athlete turned his back to reach success. The other went with the throwback look. It worked out for discus thrower Cecil Whiteside and 3,200-meter runner Rex Nelson Friday. The two won their respective events on a wet and cloudy Friday night at the CIF Southern Section Masters meet at Cerritos College. Both surprised the coaching staffs before advancing to the state meet for the first time in track and field. Whiteside claimed the title as a sophomore with a heave of 176 feet, 4 inches.

Big Brown, she is not. As the No. 12 seed in today’s 3,200 meters at the CIF Southern Section Masters meet, Sophia Ditty is a long shot. The sensational horse that has captivated many on his run toward a triple crown? That could be considered Christina Babcock of Woodbridge. But for Ditty, she has already won her race. Running eight times around the track at Cerritos College today will be like victory laps for the Newport Harbor High senior. Just making it to Masters has been a great accomplishment for Ditty.

When Hilary May takes off for a 1,600-meter race, she said nothing crosses her mind. Check her stride? Nope. How about who's in front, behind, or to her sides? Nope. Nope. Nope. "You just completely zone out," May said. "We like to call it a flow state." All locked in. That's until the Corona del Mar High senior has to brake. It happened with 250 meters left at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet last week. The finish line, not too far away for May, getting there in time to qualify for the CIF State Championships with blood gushing from the front of her left ankle is another story.

NORWALK — Before Tim Scott went through his cool down, his shoelaces were untied. Someone had to remind the Corona del Mar High 1,600-meter runner to tie his shoes before jogging away. Coach Bill Sumner did. He's nudged Scott a lot this year. This time the longtime successful track and field coach focused on just one boy, as Scott was the Sea Kings' lone male representative at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet Friday. The girls were OK, as they always are in major events.

The last time Tim Scott was competing at Cerritos College, three other boys were there with him, sporting their Corona del Mar High jerseys as they competed. This week, he's the only male runner left. Scott qualified for the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet, which takes place this afternoon at Cerritos College, in the boys' 1,600 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 17 seconds. Field events start at 5:30 p.m. and track at 6. Spencer Aguilar, Tommy Hutchison, and Thomas Dialynas of CdM competed in the CIF finals last week, but only Scott advanced.
