Corona del Mar High junior Hayley Hodson has verbally committed to Stanford University for women's volleyball, she announced Friday via Twitter. Hodson, a 6-foot-2 outside hitter, was the Newport-Mesa Player of the Year last year for the Sea Kings. She finished with 407 kills and a .356 hitting percentage, helping CdM win the Pacific Coast League and advance to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1-AA playoffs. Hodson earned league MVP and first-team All-CIF Southern Section Division 1-AA honors.

At the end of a historic season in late December, reporters asked Coach Scott Meyer about next year. Can his football team repeat a perfect season? The Sea Kings had just beaten Atherton Sacred Heart Prep, 27-15, in the CIF State Division III Bowl Game to become the first team in the state to produce a 16-0 season. Meyer, standing inside the tunnel at the StubHub Center in Carson, tried not to look ahead. "We're not going to think about that for a little while," Meyer said back then, before going into the number of starters expected to return, 10 on defense and five on offense, and the challenging nonleague schedule next season.

The Battle of the Bay game is special in each sport, but in girls' lacrosse it's maybe just a bit more friendly. The Newport Wedge girls' lacrosse program was started eight years ago by Lauren Mulvaney and the Davin family. Players from both Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor high schools have started playing there in middle school, before moving on to high school. CdM Coach Aly Simons has coached both future Sea Kings and Sailors in the Wedge program. She and Newport Harbor Coach Matt Armstrong have a good working relationship.

The Battle for the Bay tends to open the track and field season for the Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor high schools. They pushed the meet back a month this season because the teams in their respective leagues are on spring break this week. With no one else to face, the Sailors traveled to CdM on Thursday. One school ended a streak and another continued one in the Back Bay rivalry. The Newport Harbor boys pulled out a 65-62 win, beating CdM for the first time in five seasons.

Corona del Mar High sophomore Maddie Musselman can't help but notice all of the Olympians helping out with the CdM water polo program. Olympians Kelly Rulon and CdM alumna Tumua Anae are coaching on the CdM Grey girls' club team for CdM Aquatics. Four-time Olympian Ryan Bailey has been helping out with the CdM boys' program for the last several years. "I just think that's so cool," Musselman said. Some people say that Musselman is a future Olympian too. It's not a stretch at all, considering that she made her debut with the U.S. senior national team last December at the Canada Cup and has been participating in national team scrimmages with Coach Adam Krikorian since the high school water polo season ended.

Newport Beach police detectives are forwarding evidence gathered in the Corona del Mar High School cheating case to the Orange County District Attorney's office next week, police said Wednesday. The District Attorney's office will look at the evidence presented and then decide whether to file charges against the 11 students involved and Timothy Lai, the 28-year-old Irvine tutor who allegedly masterminded the scheme, said police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella. Criminal charges are far from a certainty.

Corona del Mar High girls' swimming coach Doug Volding is always a bit apprehensive before the Battle of the Bay swim meet. He had reason to be nervous Wednesday. Volding found out shortly before the meet began that one of his top club swimmers, freshman Nicole Lin, would be out of action. Volding wasn't positive why, though he heard she may have hurt her shoulder. For the Sea Kings, who were already missing one of their best sprinters in Sami Pratt (dislocated collarbone), this was obviously cause for concern.

It was a tough assignment for a Corona del Mar High girls' lacrosse team coming off spring break. The Sea Kings had to play host to Foothill in a nonleague game. Foothill is ranked No. 1 in the state of California by laxpower.com, as well as No. 3 in the western United States behind two teams from Colorado. Yes, this was a powerhouse, undefeated Foothill team coming off an 18-3 thrashing of CdM's Pacific Coast League rival Beckman on Friday. It would have been easy to lose by a comfortable margin, then talk about improving in the coming weeks for the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs.

Sophomore went up against sophomore with one out, the bases loaded and the score tied, 4-4. This wasn't necessarily a play that defined young players pitcher Connor Brown of Estancia High and Evan Larsen of Corona del Mar. It actually turned out being a bit anticlimactic as a pass ball became the final play when Nick Premer scored to give CdM a 5-4 victory in a Beach Pit Classic game at CdM Monday. But both players, Larsen's a pitcher too, made plays throughout the game that caused their coaches to continue to be excited about their respective futures.
