A couple of days before Corona del Mar High's biggest football game in 22 years, I asked Coach Scott Meyer what he expected. "I expect it to be a battle down to the wire," Meyer said of the Sea Kings' CIF Southern Section Southern Division title game against Beckman. "Whoever has the ball last will probably win. " Meyer was right on all accounts. The title game Friday featured a dramatic finish at Orange Coast College. Here was the situation: With seven seconds left to play, Beckman scored a touchdown and trailed CdM, 14-13, pending the extra-point try. The Patriots decided to go for the win. The second-seeded Sea Kings made the stop they needed, stuffing an attempted two-point conversion run by top-seeded Beckman to secure a 14-13 victory and CdM's first section crown since 1989.

One day, the Corona del Mar High boys' soccer team welcomes back three standout players and the Sea Kings win easily. A couple days later, the Sea Kings said goodbye for the season to two of them and so long for at least a week to the other. Winning will not be as easy for the team ranked No. 3 in the state by ESPN RISE without Jack McBean, Matt Francini and Grady Howe. The three players are gone for three different reasons. The losses will affect whether the Sea Kings can repeat last season's historic run to CIF Southern Section and CIF Southern California Regional titles.

The 2011-12 school year is the 50th anniversary for Corona del Mar High. The Sea Kings had a great fall season, winning a CIF section title in football and reaching the finals in boys' water polo, girls' volleyball and boys' and girls' cross country. It's been special. But there's another fascinating aspect during the 50th anniversary. CdM has two of its alumni working for the Los Angeles Lakers, one calls games on TV and the other on the radio. "Pretty cool. " Those are the words Bill Macdonald and John Ireland used to describe their respective gigs during the shortened season of the NBA. It makes sense both would say it's pretty cool that two CdM alums are calling Laker games.

City contractors began cutting down 33 blue gum eucalyptus in Corona del Mar on Monday, the second large group of such trees officials have decided to remove after a freak accident in September. Officials determined the latest set of trees was at risk of falling. West Coast Arborists started pulling out 22 trees on Fourth Avenue, north of West Coast Highway, and will move on to 11 trees south of the highway, later this week. Officials expect to be finished by Friday. On Sep. 15, one of the trees near the Costa Mesa border fell on a car and killed 29-year-old Haeyoon Miller.
