This past weekend I joined about 2,000 other people at a convention called Freedom Fest in Las Vegas. In many ways it was intensely discouraging. In many other even more important ways, it was encouraging and exhilarating. The discouraging part dealt with our present economy and the forecasts for the immediate future. Many seemingly knowledgeable people stated forcibly that we cannot have a sustainable economic recovery with such large government spending and deficits and no gain in job creation.

CORONA DEL MAR — Tumua Anae (Corona del Mar High, USC) and Anne Belden (Newport Harbor, UCLA) played water polo at rival schools in high school and college. But they're on the same team now and that's a good thing for the U.S. women's national team. Anae's 12 saves as goalie and a Belden assist and goal helped spark the Americans, who rebounded from a sluggish start to overwhelm Canada, 11-5. Team USA swept the FINA World League Prelims Saturday at Corona del Mar High. "It's nice to be home," Anae said.

"I can't tell you Aussies and Kiwis apart," I once confessed to a New Zealander. I'm pretty sure I insulted him. "There are huge differences, mate," the Kiwi corrected, "just as there are big differences between Americans and Canadians. If I said you lot were alike, you'd be offended. " Obviously, he took exception to being mistaken for an Aussie. Ask a Hungarian in Budapest to pull a Canadian from a crowd of Americans and he wouldn't be able to do it. The rest of the world sees us as Siamese twins, but we know our differences.

Four Newport Beach girls' water polo players went to Argentina this week to compete in the UANA Youth Pan American Championships. In terms of experience, the "youth" part certainly rang true. For three of them, it was their first international water polo tournament, first time representing their country on the world stage. Yet Mater Dei High incoming senior Brianna Daboub, Corona del Mar incoming sophomore Maddie Musselman and Newport Harbor incoming juniors Rachel Whitelegge and Carlee Kapana all rose to the challenge in the end. As a result, they got an experience on Saturday that they'll never forget.
