A highway pursuit involving Los Angeles police and California Highway Patrol officers ended in Irvine early Saturday morning, police said. A woman surrendered to police at 1:41 a.m. on the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway after leading police from Los Angeles into Irvine, said California Highway Patrol dispatcher Mark Williams. The woman led Los Angeles police officers into Orange County at 1:27 a.m., where six to seven CHP officers assisted police in pursuing the woman, Williams said.

An Escondido man driving a 1996 Ford Thunderbird led California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed chase Friday night that ended in a crash that left one other person injured and three cars damaged, officials said. A Westminster Highway Patrol officer attempted to stop the 65-year-old man for speeding on the southbound 405) Freeway, just south of Harbor Blvd. in Costa Mesa. The driver reportedly refused to pull over and continued to drive in excess of 100 mph onto the 55 Freeway.

A Newport Beach police officer was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving over the weekend in Los Angeles County, according to arrest records provided Tuesday by the California Highway Patrol. Monica Aguilar was arrested Friday night on the eastbound 10 Freeway at Crenshaw Boulevard in Arlington Heights, a Los Angeles neighborhood. Aguilar was pulled over about 9:25 p.m. for driving with tinted windows, according to the CHP. While talking to her, the officer reported noticing signs that Aguilar was intoxicated and gave her a field sobriety exam, said CHP Officer John Harris.

Woodrow Wilson DeWitt Woodrow Wilson DeWitt, 93, died peacefully in his home in Newport Beach, California, on Friday, July 10, 2009. Woody, as his friends knew him, is survived by his son, Richard DeWitt, his daughter, Mardel Sutton, eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Woody was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, his parents, Robert & Nora DeWitt, and eight brothers and sisters. Woody graduated from Franklin High School in Los Angeles, and attended the University of Southern California.

Alex Coolman A four-vehicle wreck on the northbound San Diego Freeway near Harbor Boulevard late Saturday snarled traffic and sent two Fountain Valley residents to the hospital with injuries. The collision took place at 7:15 p.m., according to a report released by the California Highway Patrol. An Acura Legend involved in the crash overturned, and its driver suffered a neck fracture. The passenger of the car suffered lacerations and a sprained wrist.

A vehicle struck a pedestrian on Friday night near the intersection of Irvine Avenue and Mesa Drive, sending one person to the hospital with major injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol. Newport Beach Fire Department responders drove the victim to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. At press time, it was not known if the person survived. The accident happened just after 8 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Irvine Avenue, south of Mesa Drive, the CHP reported. Because the area is technically unincorporated, investigation duties rested with highway patrol officers, according to Newport Beach Police, which also responded to the scene.

Rollover causes freeway shutdown A rollover accident shut down a lane on the Fairview Road offramp from the San Diego Freeway Monday morning. A black 2002 Chevrolet Impala going from the Corona del Mar (73) Freeway north to the San Diego (405) Freeway north just after 6 a.m. lost control, hit a right-side guardrail and flipped over, California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Johnson said. It appeared that the driver was driving too fast for the roadway, he said.

A 77-year-old driver collided with a Newport Beach Police motorcycle officer Monday, sending the officer to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with injuries to his leg and face, a police spokesman said. The officer, whose name was not released to the press, is not in a serious condition and is expected to recover, said Lt. Bill Hartford. The officer was eastbound on Ford Road about 11:15 a.m. when a white Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme struck his motorbike as the car's driver tried to turn left onto Newport Hills Drive West, Hartford said, adding that the impact pushed the officer off his bike.

An international student at  UC Irvine  led authorities on a pursuit Thursday night that at times reached 122 mph, according to the California Highway Patrol. Yuan Zhou, 18, was arrested around 9:15 p.m. after a CHP cruiser maneuvered to stop the car on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.  The pursuit began around 8:30 p.m. when Zhou's BMW allegedly blazed by a patrol vehicle on the northbound 5 Freeway at Atlantic Boulevard in the Commerce area. Zhou then transitioned to the westbound 10 Freeway and continued westbound, "weaving in and out of traffic, using the right shoulder to pass vehicles and driving at speeds up to 122 mph," according to a CHP news release.

A private investigator who called police and reported that he suspected Jim Righeimer of drunk driving denied allegations that he was hired to investigate the Costa Mesa councilman. Chris Lanzillo, 42, said in a statement that he was on another assignment Wednesday night when he spotted Righeimer getting into his SUV outside of Skosh Monahan's on Newport Boulevard. "If I was setting him up merely by calling 911, what was the purpose?" Lanzillo wrote Monday night. "Ultimately, an officer would have to make the call on if he violated any laws.

Authorities across Southern California were on high alert Thursday morning as a massive manhunt was underway for an ex-Los Angeles police officer sought in connection with a double homicide in Irvine and the shootings of three police officers, one of whom was killed. Local, state and federal authorities are involved in the search for Christoper Jordan Dorner, 33, who threatened "unconventional and asymmetrical warfare" against police in an manifesto posted on his Facebook page. Dorner also threatened more than two dozen people -- including police officials -- in his manifesto.

A 37-year-old Costa Mesa man has been arrested on suspicion of killing his friend in a car crash in San Bernardino County over the weekend, California Highway Patrol officials said Tuesday. Edward Richard Nigro, the vehicle’s driver, was arrested hours after he rolled his off-road truck in the Calico Dry Lake bed, near Barstow. The rolling truck ejected Andrew McKenzie, 26, of Costa Mesa, CHP officials said. The truck rolled onto McKenzie and killed him, San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials said.
