Vanguard Pregame Vs. Cal State San Marcos The Vanguard University women's basketball team (26-1), ranked No. 1 in Division I all season, opens the NAIA Tournament on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. PT against Cal State San Marcos (15-17) in Frankfurt, Ky. The Lions, who claimed the national championship in 2008, are making their 13th straight appearance in the NAIA Tournament, their 16th overall, all during Coach Russ Davis' 18-season tenure. Cal State San Marcos is making its inaugural trip to the tournament after winning the Assn.

MEN'S BASKETBALL Cal State San Marcos 82, Vanguard 80 Preston Wynne scored 29 points to lead the Lions in the nonconference game against top-ranked Cal State San Marcos Thursday in the Pit. Keith Mason finished with 14 points and Chris Gorman added 12 points and six assists for No. 10-ranked Vanguard (23-6). Cal State San Marcos is 28-1. Jason Johnson connected for the game-winning layup with five seconds left for the visitors. — MEN'S TENNIS Orange Coast 9, Fullerton 0 FULLERTON — No. 1 singles player Tokunosuke Takahashi scored a 3-6 6-1, 6-2 win for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match Thursday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Vanguard 61, Cal State San Marcos 47 OCEANSIDE — Junior Nicole Ballestero had 20 points and six assists to pace the visiting Lions in the nonconference game Tuesday at MiraCosta College. Ballastero added six rebounds and three steals to help the No. 4-ranked Lions improve to 3-0. Senior Esther Timmermans had 14 rebounds to go with her eight points, while senior Chelsea Alfafara made three three-pointers on her way to 11 points and freshman Samantha Doucette had 10 points for the winners.

MEN'S SOCCER Vanguard 2, Cal State San Marcos 1 SAN MARCOS ? The Vanguard University men's soccer team rallied for two late goals to earn a 2-1 nonconference triumph at Cal State San Marcos Tuesday. Freshman Christopher Leiva scored on a penalty kick in the 74th minute to force overtime. In the 15th minute of the first overtime, sophomore Dane Gallion controlled a long punt from goalkeeper William Johnson past midfield, dribbled across the box and beat the keeper to the lower left corner of the net for the game-winner.

The Vanguard University women’s soccer team earned the No. 8 seed and will play host to Cal State San Marcos in the first round of the 32-team NAIA Tournament, Saturday at a time to be determined. The Lions (12-1-6) posted a 1-0 nonconference win over the Cougars (9-4-5) on Sept. 9 in San Marcos. Vanguard has outscored opponents, 36-9, this season, while San Marcos has posted a 29-8 scoring advantage. Both schools are among three NAIA squads tied for eighth in goals allowed per game (0.47)

WALNUT — UC Irvine junior Napoleon Greene finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.14 seconds at the 51st annual Mt. SAC Relays Friday. Kevin Ott Wright of Cal State San Marcos won in 52.29 in the event that had 22 runners. UC Irvine freshman Charles Jock finished eighth of 55 runners in the 800 (1:50.06), as USC’s Irek Sekretarski won the event in 1:48.68. UCI’s Tim Murphy was 33rd in 1:55.19. Freshman Golde Ibia placed ninth of 23 competitors in the 100 hurdles (14.27)

Freshman finishes second for Lions in women's race to qualify for NAIA finals, but men's and women's teams are unable to join her.Vanguard University's cross-country teams were unable to qualify for the NAIA National Championships, but the school will be represented. Grace Jepngetich finished second in the NAIA Region II women's championship, held Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno. The freshman's performance was enough to qualify her for the national championships on Nov. 19 in Louisville, Ky. The Vanguard women placed sixth, and the men finished fifth in the regional meet.

FRANKFURT, Ky. — Vanguard University senior women's basketball standout Nicole Ballestero loves shooting down Cougars. The Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year, who earned NAIA All-American honors last season, scored 38 points to lead the Lions to a 97-47 first-round win over Cal State San Marcos in the first round of the NAIA Tournament on Thursday. Vanguard advances to face John Brown of Arkansas (26-7) in Friday's second round at 6:45 p.m. PT. John Brown defeated Lyon of Arkansas, 70-53, in the first round on Thursday.
