When Jeff Beeler isn’t coaching the Sage Hill School boys’ basketball team, he’s a newspaperman. Every day he works at his family-run newspaper in Long Beach. He sells ads, edits, and even distributes the bi-weekly Beachcomber. When it’s time to head to Newport Coast to assume his first-year varsity coach duties, the story is always the same: Get better. The Lightning early on have been without their two best players, senior shooting guard Jamie McGee and senior point guard Nick Witte.

The only problem is he isn’t eligible to play at OCC anymore. “I didn’t find out until the end of summer, so I didn’t really have too many options open,” he said. Sostak-Rosa, the No. 3 ranked golfer according to the SoCal community colleges rankings last season, was told by Orange Coast Coach Sean Collins that the brief time he spent on the University of Oregon’s golf team counts against on his college playing eligibility.
