Costa Mesa South Coast Drive: Petty theft was reported in the 900 block at 12:55 p.m. Monday. Damascus Circle: Attempted car theft was reported in the 1000 block at 1:20 p.m. Monday. Avocado Street: Vandalism was reported in the 300 block at 1:40 p.m. Monday. 18th Street: Petty theft was reported in the 700 block at 3 p.m. Monday. Anaheim Avenue: Vehicle burglary was reported in the 1900 block at 3:50 p.m. Monday. Harbor Boulevard and Harbor Center: Public drunkenness was reported at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

UC Irvine police are warning students to lock windows and doors after a string of burglaries in student housing last week. Burglars stole electronics from three unlocked first-floor apartments in the Vista Del Campo Norte dorms between 5 a.m. Friday and 11:40 a.m. Saturday, police said in a news release. Campus police ask that anyone with information that could help the investigation call the department at (949) 824-5223 Students should make sure their residences are secure and call 911 immediately if they see anything suspicious, police said.

Newport Beach police said they believe they have arrested a professional burglar who targets wealthy neighborhoods. Shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, a private security guard called police to say he had detained a man trying to climb over the back gate of a home in the 4600 block of Brighton Road. When officers arrived, they found a grappling hook, gloves, a pry bar and other burglary tools in the man's backpack, police said. Newport police then arrested Larry Lee Everett, 57, of Orange on suspicion of attempted residential burglary.
