Costa Mesa Airway Avenue: Grand theft was reported in the 3100 block between noon and 8 p.m. Monday. Pinecreek Drive: Vehicle burglary was reported in the 2800 block at 12:40 p.m. Monday. Bear Street: Animal cruelty was reported in the 2800 block at 1 p.m. Monday. 19th Street: Petty theft was reported in the 400 block at 1:20 p.m. Monday. Harbor Boulevard: Commercial burglary was reported in the 3000 block at 2 p.m. Monday. Harbor Boulevard: Auto theft was reported in the 2600 block between 8:30 and 8:40 p.m. Monday.

Newport Beach police said they believe they have arrested a professional burglar who targets wealthy neighborhoods. Shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, a private security guard called police to say he had detained a man trying to climb over the back gate of a home in the 4600 block of Brighton Road. When officers arrived, they found a grappling hook, gloves, a pry bar and other burglary tools in the man's backpack, police said. Newport police then arrested Larry Lee Everett, 57, of Orange on suspicion of attempted residential burglary.

Newport Beach police are looking for a man they believe is responsible for attempting to burglarize a home in the 700 block of Malabar Drive, authorities said. The suspect is Caucasian or Latino, about 5 feet, 10 inches and 200 pounds with a shaved head and dark mustache. On the morning of Oct. 10, police believe the man removed a screen door from the rear of a Newport Beach home and used an unknown tool to pry open the sliding door, according to a news release. The suspect did not take any property and was likely interrupted by the resident returning home, the release stated.
