Police responded Tuesday morning to four car burglaries at an expansive apartment complex at Sunflower Avenue and Avenue of the Arts in Costa Mesa. A burglar entered the covered parking lot of the 3400 Avenue of the Arts Apartments and smashed windows to get into the vehicles, according to Costa Mesa police. "Someone went through there and ripped anything of value out of the cars," Sgt. Matt Grimmond said. In one instance, the burglar smashed a car's passenger window to steal video games lying in plain sight.

UC Irvine police are warning students to lock windows and doors after a string of burglaries in student housing last week. Burglars stole electronics from three unlocked first-floor apartments in the Vista Del Campo Norte dorms between 5 a.m. Friday and 11:40 a.m. Saturday, police said in a news release. Campus police ask that anyone with information that could help the investigation call the department at (949) 824-5223 Students should make sure their residences are secure and call 911 immediately if they see anything suspicious, police said.

Bear Street: Animal cruelty was reported in the 2800 block at 1 p.m. Monday. 19th Street: Petty theft was reported in the 400 block at 1:20 p.m. Monday. Harbor Boulevard: Commercial burglary was reported in the 3000 block at 2 p.m. Monday. Harbor Boulevard: Auto theft was reported in the 2600 block between 8:30 and 8:40 p.m. Monday.

Newport Beach police said they believe they have arrested a professional burglar who targets wealthy neighborhoods. Shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, a private security guard called police to say he had detained a man trying to climb over the back gate of a home in the 4600 block of Brighton Road. When officers arrived, they found a grappling hook, gloves, a pry bar and other burglary tools in the man's backpack, police said. Newport police then arrested Larry Lee Everett, 57, of Orange on suspicion of attempted residential burglary.
